TransAfrica early March 2003, anyone else?
I am planning a trip across Africa starting in London and leaving around the 1st or 2nd week of March '03.
Depending on political situations/luck with visas/weather, plan A is as follows: via Europe to Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia etc or plaN B: via Europe to TUrkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt Is anyone planning a similar route/ date? It would be interesting to compare notes and if possible meet up along the way. Geoff |

Howzit Geoff
Judging by your surname, you as I are a South African. I’m also planning to ride from London to SA but I unfortunately wont be able to join you as I’m planning to leave in September 2003. However if you could give any advice on Visas and so on I’d really appreciate it! I’m currently trying to decide weather to purchase a XT600E and upgrade to handle the dirt or a Tenere and have it overhauled were necessary. As far as Visas go I’ve asked a visa agency to help me out here (1st Contact) but I’ve not yet heard from them! Hope all’s still going to plan for you! Thanks Daryl Watson |
Hi Daryl,
I am also planning to ride from Istanbul to SA and also planning to leave September 2003. My plan is Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya ...... , SA Also I have an XT600E Hope to see you there. Thanks Erol Demirtas |
Hi Erol
Yeah sounds great we must try and meet up! Will have to exchange details of our plans and hopefully cross paths along the way. Keep it touch Daryl |
Howzit Geoff.
Sounds like a plan. I too should be going South around the same time. I am currently in the Arab Emirates and will be done here in March. I have ridden bikes for many years but never on a trip like this. Currently riding a BMW R1150 GS. Perhaps we can meet up on the way? Quote:

Hi Geoff,
My wife and I are doing the Africa leg of our RTW trip, starting in early April 2003. Land Rover Defender. We have a very different route planned to yours, starting in Morocco / Algeria, and zig-zagging down. South first (Mali, BF, Niger, etc.), then East (Chad, Sudan / CAR, Ethiopia). Then south and west again (Kenya, Tanz, Uganda, DRC!, Angola, Namibia). And finally south/east again (Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, SA). We reckon on 6 months, give or take a few (our last Africa trip took us 9 months - SA to UK). So maybe we'll see you somewhere en route. By all means email us with your plans and we will see if we can meet up, or just swap info and ideas. Btw, you don't say what kind of transport you'll be using - bike? Either way, best of luck - enjoy yourself, and be safe. Regards, Michael (Another SA ex-pat). |
Hi Daryl,
Where are you now? When do you want to start trip? And it would be great to meet Micheal and his wife somewhere in Zambia or Mozambique... Keep in touch... Erol Quote:

Hi Mimar
In the UK at the moment! Recently purchased a 600E And I'm currently getting it prepared for overland. Almost there just some heavy-duty rims and spokes and it'll be a basic overlander! All is going to plan at the moment and it looks like my departure date of September 2003 will be enough time to have everything sorted out. How are your plans going? Daryl |
Hi mimar,
Sandy and I have made a note of your email address, and hopefully we will be able to keep in touch. Our email addresses are registered on this site too. Look forward to meeting you further south! Have a great trip, Michael & Sandy. |

Hi Omar! Do not hesitate to visit Serbia on your way,(not including Kosovo & Metohija, ofcourse) It's completly normal to travel in Serbia and always was, well, except in time of NATO campagne and 'to war or not to war'period when dictator Milosevic was on the rule! Now it's completly normal as Romania and Bulgaria, and people here are very plesent and full of hospitality for a forener than a local traveler, and love just to exchange expiriences. If you need any info contact me via email or Indjija community on HU(link in menu on left) enjoy you trip cheers jondoe |
hi,
thanks alot .i will think about serbia.but can you tell me about it please??how about hotels and places to see.the price and email to me.thanks alot, hope to see you one day. omar |
Hi, I am in Nairobi at present having come the Turkey,Syria,Jordan,Egypt,Sudan,Ethiopia route, visas enroute are no problem, I am travelling by BMW R80G/S and on a UK passport, it may be worth carrying spare tyres as the ethiopian roads eat tyres and replacements in Kenya are costly, pair of Pirelli MT 21's are about 200 pounds Sterling
