Tunisia - Nov 08 - Join the XT Girls !!
 

Think I deleted my original post by accident.

We've put together a two week, trip to Tunisia for November.

We have a 4x4 support vehicle (driven by someone who knows the route very well), which will carry luggage and spares. We will also have a Tunisian guide - who will cook authentic Tunisian food for us.. Yummmyyyy!!

Anyone who'se interested to join us - get in touch. The more bikers we are - the cheaper. We're thinking about SIX bikes is the maximum, before the support vehicle becomes too crammed.

4 WHEELED people are ALSO welcome -- the more the merrier...!!

erm, a bit of well-meaning advice, here is a quote from your website:
"Also - the 4x4 will be laying tracks for us (is that how it works?) and we hope to just merrily follow in its wake. (famous last words!)"

I made this mistake first time riding in pure deep dry sand, I found the bike nearly impossible to control as your constantly sliding about and if the wheel goes into the side of a wheel rut while your weight is going sideways it can go a bit wrong. I found that riding across the tracks or just on fresh sand was easier, the ruts just seemed to make the bike track really badly. It didn't help that I'd only had my license for a couple of months, was on a rather large 750 Elefant, and it was about 2 in the morning, and my headlights suck.

Does anyone with more experience find the ruts good or bad?

I found that undisturbed sand is better but there is sand and there is sand.
I'm sure the XT Girls know what they are doing.

This trip sounds a REAL adventure. I'd just like to register my interest in this trip. Make sure you keep us all informed of your progress. It's always so nice to know just what you XT Girls are up to. I'm a silent fan...

Where are you proposing to cross into Africa? I understand that Algeria is still a no go area so this rules out crossing from Spain into Morroco. I guess you will be crossing directly into Tunisia by ferry from Italy?

A direct crossing by ferry into Tunis will I fear be very expensive. Isn't it a great shame that you can't now safely follow the coast from Morroco right along to Tunisia. Not only would it have been great fun, it would probably have worked out cheaper too because the Spain/Morroco crossing is so damn cheap.

I wonder how much the black stuff is in that part of the world now? One imagines it must be quite cheap bearing in mind they export shed loads of the stuff?
