UK to Africa or Aus very late09 or early10?
Hello all,
testing the waters on my very first thread/post to this forum. Am looking to join reliable travel partner/partners on a trip down through Africa or to Australia in late 09/early10. Hedging my bets as I am interested to see who's out there and what plans they have. Am a virtual novice to all this but have had a bike licence for a number of years and acquired a Honda NSX650 last year. I have attended an off-road course and a mechanics course as well as researching Chris Scott's Overland book but that's about it. By the way I am no expert concerning the above by any stretch of the imagination regarding off-road skills and mechanics. I am attending the HUBB meeting in Ripley 09 but probably won't be there until Saturday, but am interested to hear from anyone with ideas that are "further down the road" pardon the pun, to making it a reality. I am also interested to learn about any useful hints and tips that people might be able to offer as to sources of information, be it maps, courses, books etc. Any constructive advice welcome, and look forward to meeting at the HUBB gathering if that's a possibility. Thank you for your interest |
hi quovadis,
Currently looking at africa but aug/sep next year and would love to join forces with others or even share the ups and downs of planning. Like you i'm a novice, off-road school over bank holiday weekend in wales, studied adventure motobiking book, only got my licence last year and am now owner of BMW F650GS (twin). I am just answering posts to see whose out there, am going to HU meet in ripley, planning on travelling up with another biker that I have been in contact with from HUBB. I'm from Portsmouth, where abouts are you LOUISE :scooter: |
Hey guys..
This is a plan I'm also toying with... I'm trying to work out costs and feasibility with what I can save.. I've done trips around Europe and South America and I'm also a trained motorcycle mechanic. I've currently got an Africa Twin but may swap it for a DRZ400S for the trip if I do it... I'll also be at Ripley and would like to chat about this if thats cool ... :thumbup1: |
Count me in too...
Hi Folks,
I am in the very-serious-thinking stages about heading down through Africa toward the end of this year - leaving perhaps middle September. It's been something in the pipeline for a long time and now with the poor economy and very little work it seems the perfect excuse to get it together... I am very keen to do the route which is roughly Italy, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Namibia, South Africa..., although am open to other ideas. I'm happy also to hook up for parts of the ride if that somehow suites folks better - preferably though the north eastern parts of the route... I'll be riding my 650 DAKAR... I'm going to be at Ripley too - but it will be necessary to meet up much earlier than July... I am in Middlesex, but always keen on a weekend away if needs be to meet up elsewhere for discusions... |
Thanks for the response
Hello folks,
been off the radar in the hills for a few days, no mobile or internet links so pardon the slow response. I would welcome the opportunity to meet all 3 of you at Ripley (lou, ted, and harmless). Harmless, my timetable is a bit tight until then and it is likely that I will only be able to meet at Ripley due to work. Lou, I am in Yorkshire, so a fair distance away from Portsmouth but I have seen a couple of your previous blogs to others on the site, so I look forward to hooking up with you and other travelling companions just to flesh out ideas? Ted, great internet site and grateful for your interest would value the opportunity to meet and discuss things. Please keep in touch and I look forward to seeing you all at Ripley. Do continue to keep in touch, if any of you are keen to exchange e-mail outside the HUBB then I am happy to go along with that. let me know your thoughts Thanks and regards |

Cairo To Cape Town
We are planning a trip from London or Cairo To Cape Town starting next Sept. and finish about Xmas. Still over a year off but takes a bit or organising, we will have about 4 Bikes and (2) 4x4s, anybody interested in joining our expedition let us know,:welcome: we are going the east side and expect to take 4 mths. We are thinking of starting our trip from Cairo as we are Aussies we need to ship our bikes and vehicles over and this way can spend more time in Africa. We are then going to ship to Sth. America and do 4 mths the next year over there.

Hi
I am looking at the mo as well Choice is Cape Town, Thailand or Aus Date is flexible Will be on an airhead, so will not be as fast.......... Will be at Ripley and live in South Lincs George |
Looks like there could be quite a possy assembled for late 2010.... :D
If all goes to plan (as in I dont get made redundant or ill kidnapped by Aliens), then I'm planning on being on the road for late 2010 with about £8,000 - £10,000 in the kitty.. Based on the assumption of spending £1000 a month for travelling, £1000 getting me and bike home and the rest on a carnet and emergencys. I do enjoy travelling with like minded people. I've travelled alone and it has its advantages, but with Africa, I think I'd prefer some buddies !! |
Great to see your expected budget ted! Was thinking the same amount, maybe a bit more for the unexpected - obviously everything will go smoothly :( especially if theres a mechanic on board. I myself am a pharmacist and have keen interest in travel medicine.
Awesome that so many want to do africa, it will be my first and I'm not know to do things by halves. Really looking forward to HU meet and getting more info! I've done lots of travel - off to mongolia next month - but nothing like this and i can't wait. Not keen to rush the experience and kick up the dust but just chill out and enjoy :funmeteryes: If anyone wants to stay in touch you can e-mail me at Luese@tiscali.co.uk |
Good to know
Thanks to all, who replied to my original link. I am encouraged by the number of people who got in touch. I hope to contact you through your e-mails to ensure that we can meet up at Ripley. I have been away again hence the long pauses between posts.

Have just found this thread. There's so much info on the HUBB it takes a while to search all through it. Anyway, have pretty serious plans to depart London for Cape Town in September. Things are fairly advanced but still LOTS to do. More info here: www.horizonsunlimited.com/tstories/thomas. (There should be a link to it at the bottom of this post if I've done this right!) Will also be at Ripley, arriving Thursday I hope. Will be happy to meet anyone with similar plans. Ride safe. |

Join you at Cairo!
I live in Egypt and am interested in the Cairo-Tanzania/Uganda leg. I don't have much time allocated for this (3-4 weeks), so I'll be off and fly back.
Willing to help anyone coming over to Egypt for that matter. Have been overlanding before and have been to Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania. So if you think you will be doing this leg in about 3-4 weeks I'd like to join.. |
Thanks
To all the people who have contributed to my original link, I just wanted to say thanks I will hopefully see many of you at Ripley this year. As I have have explained I hope to be there at the weekend. So I will be circulating and tracking down those who posted on the link.
All the best until then Q |
