UK to S Africa

Hi Pete

As said I'm in the early stages of planning and looking at certain options at the moment. I have the bike, know roughly the route I want to take and if need be will do it alone. However, I would much prefer to do it with someone else and share the whole experience. Have you travelled in Africa before and do you have much experience? Would be good to discuss further if your interested. Bob

Hi Bob,

I'm planning on the same route as yours, and as you, would prefer to travel with a companion or two, but will do it alone if it's not possible. I intend on leaving October'09, I have the bike and have started a small amount of prep on it. I would like to spend 4-5 months on the trip, taking an easy pace.

Trans Africa

I'm currently riding the Americas: have taken a year from prudhoe Bay to Guatemala, now plan to reach Ushuia for Christmas, then Rio in Feb and Cape Town in April. Will ride to the UK on the East coast, then back down the west. I would like to ride at least the difficult parts with one or more companion. Please keep me in mind for your journeys.
PM me if you want any info on my experiences so far.

How much have you planned for your trip? I'm trying to plan for a trip to Cameroon either from SA up or Brentwood (uk) down. I plan to help my girlfriend whilst she volunteers somewhere near Yaounde at a wildlife sanctuary for six weeks. The time of your trip would be the time we would look to go, so we would only be able to join you for part of the trip. That also depends on whether or not your going that route. I have no experience in planning a hard core trip like this, although i have rode alot in SE Asia, and quite extensively in Cambodia on XR250's for a couple of thousand miles.

UK to SA

Hi Tony...and all other interested parties. The last few months has really been about researching the general requirements for the trip i.e. costs (carnet, visa's etc), deciding on what the bike needs in the way of mods, essential kit to take, luggage (configuring properly for best fit and so on) and generally discussing any other issues, such as do I have the finances and will I still have a job to come back to! That aside, there's a wealth of information on HU which has and will continue to serve as a reminder of what needs addressing. We're looking at a departure date of around mid October 2009 and hopefully by then we'll be as ready as we can be - if not we're off anyway.

West Africa Southbound November 2009

Hi guys

My husband and I are going down to SA, leaving UK and travelling for around 6 months. We'll be going down in 'The Kwagga', our Landcruiser 2.4TD. We've started preps on the 'cruiser. Finance sorted and finalising route documentation plans. Hope to run into you guys along the way. We're open to any questions. Good luck and see you down South...

To Innespocock

I do believe there are more than one travelling windows. Oct/Nov and Mar/April... Personal preference I think. I'd like to spend Xmas and New Year in Africa and back to SA for mid - 2010 to enjoy the Football world cup.
Good luck:thumbup1:

I'm also in the planning stage of a similar trip... learning a heap from the HUBB,

I'm london based and would really like to catch up with anyone who is keen.

I'll have a website up soon with a more detailed plan, but for the moment my planning is on the facebook, on zzr-rg.co.uk and in the route planning section here.

hope to hear from some people

Hi Bob and others who are interested, I’m also planning a trip around this time down through Africa. Got the bike (doing mods now), have a very rough route involving west Africa and will go alone if necessary but would be great to share it or parts of journey.

I’ve booked a 14day trip in Morocco out into the Sahara in April, lead by Chris Scott (if you don’t know him you should check out his books on adventure riding!). Riding my own bike down so it will be a test run (a dry run! haahaa), get experience of riding on sandy conditions PLUS picking Mr Scott’s brain for north Africa routes and other information. Hoping to go from Cairo to Dakar via Timbuktu for the first part, then down the west side.

Would also like company for the Cairo – Dakar route if anyone is interested, but could meet up with you/others for the western route down. Have travelled loads of country’s on personal trips, just not on the bike (done bike trips in Europe). Was working down west Africa last year (now in Iran).

I’m based in Weymouth, UK.

Cheers, Duck
