Vladivostok 2017

In 2018 the plan is to sail my wee Yacht over to the French Canals & leave it there for a season.

Then ride to Vladivostok, mostly on blacktop all the way ~ if that’s possible. Bike is an ’02 Yamaha fjr1300 (with heated grips) that’s just done a 6000 km UK – Romania round trip. Rough plans is to go thru as many Countries as possible & see a few Capitals, Berlin, Warsaw, St Petersburg, Moscow etc etc. Plan to drop off at the Mig29 base & try to cadge a ride ~ And whatever fun idea crops up en-route. I’m ex RAF Fighter engineer, handy with tools & been around the block a few times ~ fairly self sufficient.

Riding buddies would be nice. But if you are the type that has to have all the T’s dotted & the I’s crossed afore you cross the hearth in the morning. If you worry about what might go wrong (Lots will !!) rather than what fun it will be. Someone to look after the Cat/Dog / Garden / Granny ,, then perhaps not best suited.
Haven't even thought of how to get back..

Replies on a postcard please

Hi Andy,

nice plan. I will travel to Kamtchatka next spring (on 4WD to Chabarowsk, then taking an airplane) and afterwards back to Mongolia, leaving or selling the car there.
But I will take a more southern route: Europe, ferry on the Black Sea, ferry on the Caspian Sea, the ?-stan and Russia. Maybe, we will meet us.

Cheers

Thanks for the msg ~ we are planning a more northerly route so we may not meet up with You. However, things evolve & develop, so who knows.

Hi Andy, if you need any help with planning the trip dont hesitate to ask. And it would be nice to meet you in Russia.

Catch a flight with MIG29 is nice, though not an easy one..)) Most probably I know how you can ride a real tank, but not sure about MIG29.

Anyway here is my contacts, write me if you will need any help - alex.nikonov@rusmototravel.com

And by the way we do Moscow-Vladivostok and vice versa Vladivostok-Moscow tours, he is web site - RUSMOTOTRAVEL | Motorcycle Tours over the Trans-Siberian Route. You can ride with us if you want

Hi ALex

Well the trip is still GO. I'll have a look at your site.. is the trip do'able on a FJR1300 ? or would an off-road Bike be better ?

So can you organise to drive a Tank ??

I'm working on the Mig ride ~ I'm not a qualified Pilot but have flown a few 2 seat fast jets, supersonic. So a 29 will be no problem, provided they let me do a few aero's, rolls, loops, inverted & of course supersonic.

Keep Smiley

Hi Andy,

Its doable on your bike, main roads are good. The only problem is that there is traffic on all main roads. And road condition on secondary roads vary, but in general secondary roads not for sport tourist or HD bikes, twin endure is best choose. Off road is not necessary.

Regarding riding a tank - its possible, lets discuss it next year and in private.

Regarding Mig 29 - there are companies offering Mig29 flights, like this - 29mig.com | Fighter jet rides on Mig-29 - Take flights on Russian fighter jet. 10-15 thousand EUR....

I drove Barcelona to Vladivostok in 2015 in LR Defender. Nice drive. Asphalt all the way on the main roads. Secondary roads can deteriorate into helldrives rapidly. Asphalt is sometimes good, sometimes very bad.
In Vladivostok, you can container back to Europe or take the ferry to Japan or Korea. Uri Melnikov and his company LINKS are the people everybody seems to deal with. I found them extremely professional. They will store your bike and then bundle it with a few others to save money, if you are not in a rush.

Mongolia, except for the main road from Ulan Ude to Ulan Bataar is strictly for offroad vehicles, especially the further west you go.
