90 day EU limit for UK insurance?
Hi there,
A mate and me are planning a 7 month European ride this year, we are Aussies who will be on UK licences. Most online motorbike insurance quotes that I've looked at only include 90 days/year EU third party fire and theft cover, this will obviously not be long enough for us! Does anyone have any recommendations for EU cover with a UK mob that doesn't have this 90 day limit? We're only after third party fire and theft cover. Thanks a lot! Dave. |
Carole Nash give no limit on European cover other than each trip can't exceed 90days. Go for three months, come home for a day, go for another three months.
This applies to extending full insurance and breakdown cover to Europe so you have to tell them when & which countries you're going to. If you don't tell them though, you only get minimum third party cover BUT they don't know if you've exceeded the 3months per trip. I know someone who had similar "as much time abroad as you want as long as each trip was less than 3months", I think with Bennetts who are usually cheaper than CN Shop around, they all say 90days max but that doesn't neccessarily mean 90days maximum total per year, some it means per trip. |
Hi
I think last year I went with Carole Nash because you could have more than 90 days on one continuous trip on one of their policies. Wether they still do it though??? I have no idea if they can check where you have been to see if you have overstayed, but you should tell them when you leave the UK, and what countries you will be travelling in, which will make it harder if you are somewhere you shouldn't past 90 days if you can't get that, i.e. uninsured. I had a more than 90 day policy on my camper two years ago which they stopped without telling me when I renewed (different company). Since they also couldn't cover me in Morocco they suggested that while there, having bought local insurance at the border, I cancel the UK policy, and start again on return which you could also do on a bike when nearing the 90 day limit? You would need to be sure that you can start a new policy while not in the UK though, as for instance most medical insurance policies won't allow a renewal while abroad from our recent personal experience. They don't make it easy do they?!?! :) |
