A very odd question.
 

I'm in cancun (or will be in a couple of days) from where i will fly back to the UK. The bike is not really worth taking, for the cost and hassle of shipping i can buy a better one at home.

Coming to the conclusion that the bike will stay here in mex..

my question is: as far as the Denunciation / police / paperwork is concerned (as i do want to return to mexico some day! (and prob on a bike)) Is it better to leave it on the street with the keys in overnight in a dodgy area, or should i make sure theres at least half a tank of pemex's finest in it, chuck a match in and have a celebratory bonfire?

burning it, although antisocial, does mean i can't be accused of selling it..... or would i then be lumbered with shipping the carcass home?

if i just flew out (i'm in a hurry) and left it without processing paperwork, would i ever be able to get back into mexico again?

any opinions welcomed.

and yes in know its not playing by the rules / its not cricket / yada yada / and all that.

Can´t you drive to the border with Belize, export the bike from Mexico and don´t drive into Belize, just leave it in between the 2 borders, tell cops you forgot something in Mexico and will be right back ;-)leave the keys on it, someone might give you a hand in making it disappear...Get back into Mexico and take a bus to Cancun??? Nothing illegal, better than a fire, never know what might happen, some countries make you pay taxes even when the vehicle has been destroyed.
Just an idea, I have been in Belize once from Playa de Carmen ages ago...

How about donating it
 

I could be wrong but I think you are allowed to donate the bike to a church or such and get a form signed which will clear you of responsibility.

Ride it south, check it out of Mexico, sell it to somebody in the free zone between Mexico and Belice, 1st class bus back to Cancun....

rode to chetumal, then to the border. sold it (for a very nominal fee) to the immigration man. got customs form completed, with a "if anyone asks you sold it outside the casino in the free zone" and the job was a good un.

thanks all. back in the UK. had a curry last night. fantastic. strange the things you miss.
