Around Africa without a Carnet - is it possible?
 

Hi All,

I'm hearing rumors of a few people that have recently gone around Africa without a Carnet.

For Egypt you can just put down a deposit at the border and get it back when you leave.

Does anyone have any more information, or a list of countries in Africa that absolutely 100% will not let you in without a Carnet?

I just put the words "africa without a carnet" into the search box at the top of this and every page on the hubb. It came up with over 5000 hits. I didn't get further than the top 20, but they all looked useful. Best to also check if the rules are different for 2 or 4 wheels and if you arrive via a land border or at a sea port.

How do you propose I find out if the rules are different for 2 or 4 wheels, and if it matters if I cross via land or sea?

Searching/reading like you say.

FWIW, I believe that when your vehicle arrives at a South African seaport you need a CdP, but on a bike at a land border into the RSA/Nam/Bots customs union you don't. Can't comment on airports.

Maybe share the results of your searching here? There's many more people asking than answering.

Morocco = not req (no payment)
Mauritania = not req (pay some fee at the border)
Mali = = not req (pay some fee at the border)
Borkina Faso = not req (pay some fee at the border)
Togo = not req (pay some fee at the border)
Benin = not req (pay some fee at the border)
Nigeria = not req (no fee)
Cameroon = not req (no fee)
Chad = not req (no fee)
Sudan = = not req (pay some fee at the border)
All the of the above was my route last year, maybe things have changed since then.
I also heard from some travellers that you could do Egypt without carnet by paying deposit at point of entry and collect money back at exit point.

Was that Sudan or South Sudan? And just curious, where did you go after sudan? I will be in Turkey in Jan 2016 looking for a way to get to east africa without a carnet.

Interesting to get some recent info on this subject!

I'm in the fase of getting a cdp or not on my way to Kenia. From what I understood from the ADAC is that it is mandatory for Kenia, Tanzania, Sudan,Burundi, Malawi etc.

Apart from being mandatory for countries like Kenia, wouldn't having a cdp be less troubles/fuss at he border?

Hi, I am purchasing a bike in South Africa and am curious about the Carnet De Passage... Where do you go to get one? and must you have a new one for each country that you visit. I am very confused by it all. My plan is to go Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Mozambique and beyond... I am leaving from Cape Town area and would like to cover all bases and have one regardless of cost if it is going to save me trouble further on down the track. Thank you, Tilly.

I would suspect that you need to purchase your CDP from the AA in South Africa; normally a carnet is issued by the country of vehicle registration (though not exclusively).
Depending on countries you wish to visit you may find a CDP is not required.
AA in South Africa are very efficient, helpful and have very good site.
i suggest look there first and see what you need, if you need direct help then i recommend Odette Pombo who will assist you.

I'm trying to find out info on the CdP requirements too. My wife is going to Malawi for a year or so and we're planning to ship our old Landcruiser there in the next few weeks. The car will be shipped to Tanzania and then we'll drive it to Malawi where it will stay for the remainder of the time other than occasional short excursion to some of the surrounding countries. THE ADAC have said they can provide a carnet but they said they 'recommended it' since the car is going via Tanzania. I'm yet to find anyone who can tell me if the carnet is definitely needed though or if there is another way.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

With the RAC in the UK stopping the issue of CDP's after this year things have got interesting.

I have just been given a letter of "Non Objection" to which the German ADAC have been copied into.

Having said this i am at the moment still planning to get TIP's at the borders as i travel down the West coast of Africa. If i get stuck the ADAC usually can get one to you within 2 weeks.

I have also heard that it maybe possible to give the South African Government a "Bond" as you enter which covers you for East Africa as well (Not Kenya) I am in touch with someone who will be researching this and trying it themselves.
