ATA Carnet

Sorry to bother the list again.I just face a new possible problem with this.We have ADAC carnets for our M/C's which are going on transport to Bangkok from Rotterdam mid next week. When talking to customs officer he asked if we had an ATA carnet also. This should be for the panniers contents(spare parts and tools as well as riding gear which is all packed along with M/C's inside the packed pallet. This carnet can only be picked up from the local chamber of commerce will cost an additional 270 euro's and would need to be ready when the consignment goes on board of the transport vessel. It was mentioned we would need this at every border crossing(China/Mongolia/Russia/Kazakstan etc all the way back to Europe).I never heard or read any about it and info found here is backdated from 2003/6.Anybody that can shed a light on this and advise me????Many thanks in advance!

There's plenty of information regarding the ATA carnets on the hubb that is a lot more recent than 2003/ 6.

The search function (top right) is now very good. From personal experience and reading on the hubb, I get the impression that any shipping agent or customs officer who mentions an ATA carnet doesn't know their arse from their elbow and should be avoided.

For shipping to/from NL I recommend Peet van Dam at Mainport.

As far as needing an ata or even cdp for anywhere between Vladivostok and Europe: This is utter bo!!ocks. Probably a cdp needed for China. Best to read up on this. Considering the nightmare bureaucracy and expense I'll never go to China on a bike.

Thanks Chris. I was looking in the wrong place...I dont do very well on computers I'm sorry!
good to know you can travel without ATA carnet the Adac Carnet de Passage was originally bt because Australia was also in the plan...but over the top expensive to die it for 10 days- 2 weeks and then airtransport to Bangkok as otherwise it was too timecostly to ship across from Darwin to Bangkok....27 days is a too long a wait.so we opted for more time exploring Thailand/Laos and Vietnam before we enter China.Found lots of very good info on your 2011-2012 pages with some great video footage!
