australian travel insurance/bikes
does anyone know of an australian travel insurance company that will cover people using a motorcycle whilst travelling abroad. i am really only interested in getting medical coverage in case of an accident while away.
most insurance companies will only cover the use of machines 150cc or less that have been hired / rented. thanks people...phil. |
These do: http://www.comprehensive.co.nz/ , but I don't know whether they will cover Oz residents. Worth asking. I have had a policy with them and as far as I can tell from the wording of their policy they don't exclude bikes. They do, however, exclude travel to "remote places", or at least you have to pay more. They don't define that.

Phil, I used CGU insurance. They cover motorcycles if you have a valid licence. I got the insurance through a local broker in Melbourne, it was the same price as other travel insurance....I cant comment on service as I didnt have a claim.

ok so i will answer my own question,
i finally went with a company called world care, under written by alliance. they cover worldwide bike travel as long as i hold a valid australian bike licence. they were about 500 bucks cheaper than cgu insurance phil. |
Please can you tell me the contact details for world care, underwritten by Alliance. The company we used in 2000 - 2001 is now exactly double for our next trip commencing in September so we really do need to look about. Put your insurance co into search but couldnt find it. I ride better than I use a computor which is a good thing. Thanks, Cheryl.

We used travel insurance offered by ANZ. It was underwritten by another company, but all claims etc went through ANZ. At the time (Jan 03) it was the cheapest I could find that did not have an issue with bike riders.
Was for seven months and when we returned had a number of claims that went through reasonably well The claims where; Broken camera Costs associated with delay in travel due to lost travel documents (costs associated with getting new Russia visa (was great as did not have receipt, but stilled paid as had plenty of supporting evidence) Sickness Costs associated with delay in travel due to sickness (Hotel bill) Sundry small personal items like replacement keys, wheel locks etc Overall process of claiming was OK except they had trouble with the fact that we where a little out of the square. We did not go to a hospital in Dushbane (Tajikistan was advised against going, rather we booked ourselves into a Air-conditioned hotel) and had a report from the American Embassy approved Doctor (That is a whole story itself!!). The other hiccup was the Kazak Police report detailing the lost passport and other stuff (11 hours waiting and hassling to get it) The only thing they rolled us on was the cost of getting a new transit visa for UZ. Did not really argue the case as it was only $90USD each. Hope this is of help if you have not already left. Cheryl The number you have left on the post looks like a Brisbane number. Am also in Brisso. Gave it a call, but no answer. So hope you get around to reading this post again and the information is of help. |
hi there, im actually in london now , my bike turns up in two days.
im trying to remember how i got onto these guys but i think this is it. i went to lastminute .com australia and used there thier travel insurance link...which was world care assist. just to let you know it cost me 1058 aussie dollars for two people travelling through europe and asia for 8 months and you can pay to extend for a fair bit longer after that. you should try and google them...goodluck. |
Have tracked down Worldcare insurance. They have an office in Brisbane. Phone them on 131484. or www.mondial-assistance.com.au
The good thing about this co is you can get medical only insurance as against having the full travel insurance deal that doesnt really apply to overland on a motorcycle. The other thing I liked with the medical only was the fact that you could keep renewing the policy for as long as you liked. Some 'regular' travel insurance will only cover you for 12 months, others for 18 months but with this company the medical is for as long as you like. Do we really need cover for airline disruptions and cancellation fees??? Sorry I didnt answer the phone. was proberbly on the internet. Live on Bribie Island till we leave in September. |
