australians in south america: does travel insurance cover motorbike?
hola
I am heading off with a friend to do 8 month in south america, we cant get clear answer from travel insurance companies about whether their policies cover you on a motorbike. It seems to me that they are just covering their asses before we leave, and if we didn't tell them we are on motorbikes then the policies would have to cover us anyway. Anyone got advice or experience with this? cheers |

There's only one policy available in Aussie to my knowledge which covers your needs - I'm currently using the same policy as am in the USA on my bike. Call Bernie Ryan at IBG Insurance 03 9813 3633 or email the old bugger bernie@ibgroup.com.au Bernie does all my insurance for the bikes in containers and travel insurance for allmy clients which does include motorcycle travel. Tell him you're a client of mine and he should give you a good discount. Kind regards Dave Milligan |
Surely, if motorcycling is not listed as one of the excluded activities (eg rock climbing, parachuting and the like) then you should be covered!
That said I decided to check when we travelled as I did not want the risk of being uncovered. It does irk m that, despite being a means of transport, motorcycling is listed as an activity.... I bet they don't look at push bikes in that fashion....:rolleyes2: |
WorldNomads.com.au will cover you.
|
we've looked into it a bit more and it seems like some policies restrict the capacity of the bike you can ride, ie you are covered if riding a bike under 200cc but not if you are over!!
seems they dont want to cover travellers.. cheers to those who've posted suggestions Im gonna look into them now. goodonayaz troy |

world nomads +2
I've used World Nomads, as well, on a number of occasions. If you are an Australian resident the underwriter will cover you if you are legally licensed to ride a motorbike (check the small print). No restrictions.
I used them on my trip through South America and a few months ago in in Thailand. I've never actaully claimed anything through them though, so no experience there. |
I have Tower Life and before my trip I called them up as I could find nothing in the policy that said I could NOT ride a bike, I have had this running for over ten years, they said it would cover me.
I have not yet had to find out :) Cheers TS |
We used CGU in 2008.
I was very happy with their help. I rang and asked, and the guy assured me that as long as we weren't riding irresponsibly (massively speeding or drink driving) then we were covered, as was any damage we caused. He then happily gave me his name and direct number and said to call if I had any further questions. Fortunately had no need to check how their claims work though. |
We have used CGU also, several times.
Their "disclosure statement and policy" says "we will NOT cover any loss or damage as a result of or caused by ....motorcycling unless the driver has a current motorcycle licence - this applies even if the driver is not required to hold a motorcycle licence or a motorcycle licence is not required by law". Fortunately, like HENN, haven't had to test it yet. Their phone no is 13 15 32. |
