Bike docs/Licence address tie in
 

I've just been reading Tim Cullis's excellent GS knowledgebase & he mentions that at point of entry in Morrocco they will check that the address on my (UK) driver's licence matches that on my bike docs (V5), but it doesn't. This was never a problem when I rode NZ to UK some years ago & I've worked really hard to keep hold of my cloth-eared manky piece of green paper licence & not have to get a horrible photo one! Is this likely only to arise in Morrocco or will it be a problem on the rest of my ride to Capetown (west coast)? In other words can I blag it a bit, or will it be easier to bite the bullet & change it? I do have an NZ licence but a UK passport so I doubt this will help? Supposed to be leaving this week though! I too am clinging on to my old 1975 DoT green paper licence despite moving from that address. Actually the ex-wife now owns the address and continues to live there (I got the bikes - seemed fair!), so mail sent there continues to reach me.

The licence address is also what they will write on the International Driving Permit as they copy information directly from the DVLA Licence. However, as the chap doing it at Eurotunnel stamped ALL driving categories, he might be equally flexible over the address. If this is a matter that concerns you, at £5.50 each, why not get 2 IDPs if he is obliging?

Only once, a few years ago in France, the differing addresses got noticed - to which I explained my Licence is registered at my home and I keep all my vehicle registrations, insurance etc up to date from my office address. I showed my Passport linking my full name, photo, signature and date of birth to the licence (encoded in the number and expirt at age 70) and that the full name also matched the V5 and Insurance documents. I was let go with a caution about missing an obscure red light!

This aparent addresses anomoly was not commented upon at any of the 11 border crossings I made where I was asked to show documents last summer - this was not Morocco though, Eastern Europe and further east.

I already received my 2 IDP's (with all 5 boxes stamped) from the RAC in Bristol. As you mention they've just copied the address from my licence as I expected. Therefore my licences are at one address whilst my passport, & all the bikes are registered at another. My 'office' for all intents & purposes. I'm sure it'll be fine & worst case senario, I'm cruising around southern Spain whilst I await a new licence - hardly a chore! However if anyone out there knows I'm in for agro please lemme know.
