bike insurance
 

I'm hoping to do a North to South of the Americas starting Sep.'04. I would be grateful if anyone has any advice about bike insurance to cover the entire trip or if that is not possible advice on country by country insurance, pitfalls included.

Where you from? That will have a big effect on the answer!

For south and central America - forget insurance, you can't get it and it's worthless if you do anyway.

Mexico and north requires it, and you must have it.

Many thanks Grant, I'm from Scotland so I would think that Canada and the USA would be no prob and I've seen Mex insurance offices at several border crossings, no doubt a rip off but thats life. maja

I am off in a month to cross the USA , then heading through Mexico, Central and South America, also having insurance woes...mainly beacause I want to buy a bike in the States, but as a UK citizen and non US resident, I still don't know if I can register the bike in my name or if I can arrange insurance from the UK....HELP!

I can't help with the other 49 states, but for sure in AZ, you don't have to be a resident here to register a vehicle, or get insurance. We have a large illegal mexican population living under the radar, but they get license plates and you can purchase insurance too, which will cover you in the US. Just a note though - with no USA driving history, your insurance (if you buy it through a US carrier and not lloyds or some international group) will run you a bit on the expensive side.

Not so any more south and central America have started to "require" it as well. dont think it will do you any good. Most places have it at the border but not the USA or Canada (both USA and Canada will use each others)

Its been posted to death on where to it in the USA you can get it on line before you go. You dont need to be a resident gust have a place to send the paperwork. Most bike shops have insurance they will sell you on the spot print you a card and off you go.
