bike tour issue:carnet problem

currently i am planning my 2 years RTW bike tour. I have come across the problem when i bring the bike crossing the border. It may require the temporay duty but may covered by the carnet. Then, i come across 2 types of carnet. One is the Automation Association (AA) carnet and another is the ATA carnet. I am so confusiing with both of it. AA carnet application require me to pay cash 100% to 300% of my bike market price in order to get the max carnet deposit. WHile from the ATA carnet website (i not confirm whther am i on hte correct way of understanding), it require on few hundred dollars to get the carnet. Both are so much different. Anybody ca advise me on this matter. By the way, even most of the country do accept carnet, but how with the country who is not accept carnet as deposit? Such aa AA carnet for China. Do we need to pay/put deposit again for the local government, since we have pay 1 time deposit already to obtain the carnet. The carnet is only renewable annually, how could us finish the trip in just 1 year? anybody can comment on it? hope you all can provide me some info on it thanks in advance daniel ma |

Hi Daniel,
Have a look on the left in the menu under Paperwork, there is a good explanation of the Carnet de Passage en Douane. You can't use the ATA carnet for vehicles. There is a list of countries on Wikipedia which require the carnet. For most other countries no deposit is required. China is a different Story, see the Topics in the North Asia section. Daniel, I'm not sure, but I would say that you need a UK registered bike to get a UK carnet. With regard to cost, that depends on the value of your bike. They take that value and multiply it by the amount of the highest customs duty charged by the various countries to be visited. For example on a UK carnet, if you visited India(500% duty) and Egypt(800%:eek:!) they would charge 800% duty or 8xthe bike's value. Hope this makes sense and hasn't confused you even more!! Derek. |

The word carnet is French for booklet, so there are plenty more types of carnets about. Here on HUBB we use the word carnet to mean the CDP (Carnet de Passage en Douane). If you are working in SIN then shouldn't your bike be registered there? In any case, go and see the SIN AA and talk to them. If they won't help you, talk to the AA in the country where your bike is registered. |

Sorry, but that is how it works. You must deposit a large sum of money as security, to guarantee that you either export the bike again or, if you don't, the AA has your money to pay duty and tax with.
The problem is that some countries demand 300 % or more of the value of your bike as a security. Imagine you would have to deposit this at a border, then get it back at another border when you leave. Impossible. That's what the carnet is for. I don't think you have to return to SIN to get a new carnet. Normal procedure is that you contact the AA some time before the carnet expires, pay a fee, give them a contact address and they send you the new carnet. You get the old carnet stamped out when you leave the country, then use the new carnet to enter the next one. You then return the old carnet to the AA by mail. Extending the carnet for 3 months is a totally different procedure and you should avoid this, if possible. It is complicated and only usefull, if you have to stay longer in a country than your carnet is valid for. The extension is only valid for the country you are in, so if the next country also requires a carnet you will need to get a new one as well as an extension. This may all sound complicated at first, especially since English is obviously not your first language. But if you think about it for a while, re-read some of the info then it should become clear. SIN AA is your best (and the only possible) contact for getting a carnet. |

It is different with what you provide, she said also that Egypt rate is around 65%. And the renewal of carnet can be done while on the journey, but must contact with original AA (for me is the Singapore AA), and not dealing with any local AA. I need to apply for a fresh carnet, but before that i need to go to my guarantor bank to apply the carnet deposit which must be some one in Singapore to help me to do that. All these may take 1 to 2 weeks. Feel free to add on |
Every AA does it slightly differently. Seeing the deposit is rather low, I guess there is an insurance premium in the non-refundable fee.
