Did you do this trip Big T?
Looking to do a black sea loop from london in September, just trying to figure out the route and how to get from Turkey into Russia - is the Georgia-Russia Border open? cheers Ludo |
Russia-Georgia
Last may, the border was closed, and since recent troubles between the two, i do not expect it to open, i had a talk with some people in Tblisiand they gave following option, shipping from/to Odessa to Georgia, for more info, look at
www.ttc.ge for phonenumbers, ask around and see what#s the best option, also, the southern part of Russia is not considered safe, remember Beslan and the war in chechenya |
North Caucasus
Thanks for the advice.
I was coming to the same conclusion, best to avoid the areas of Russia bodering Georgia, especially to the west. Considering the Batumi-Sochi ferry, but a ferry to a slightly more northern port of Russia (perhaps from Turkey) might be a better option. I found this aussie site useful. http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-c.../Advice/Russia Can anyone offer any further advice on ferrys to Russia accross the black sea? Have you done it? cheers |

I just drove through Bulgaria & Romania (4 weeks ago) to get here to Istanbul. While coimng via BURGAS (Bulgaria port town) I saw road signs indicating ferrys/boats to Russia.
Also while on subject of Ferry and Russia. . . . . . . Does anybody know of route across Bering Straits from Russia (Magadan) to Canada ???? Phil. |
past experience
Ferry from Russia (magadan) to North America:
I was in Magadan this summer and could not get any help at the ferry port. We walked and and spoke english....straight away the man went and found the lady who spoke english and she said 'No, we can not get you or your bike on a ship'. We spoke to a travel agent in magadan..they said they could get me on a ship....but we ended up flying out of magadan to Vladivostok. Ferry on Black Sea: I used the 'Princes Victoria' - it goes from Trabzon (tr) to Sochi (ru). try svs@sochi.ru I just turned up, bought a $150 ticket and was fed, watered and slept for 4 days at no extra cost (the ship was delayed!!) mark www.etribes.com/markstowe http://www.etribes.com/markstowe?from=200 Read from this day onwards for details of the ship to Sochi |
round the black sea.
Did any one complete the trip, we are thinking of doing this next summer, 2010. Has any one got any feed back for us. We will be riding down from Calais.
Thanks Sprint Rder + Pillion |
Would also be interested on getting feedback on this.
My trip around Black Sea is starting on 27th of June 2010 from Finland. First stop in Antalya Turkey 3rd of July for two weeks and continuing from there. |
Hi, myself and my son did a tour of the black sea in summer 09. We were unable to travel through georgia and took the ferry from Sochi to Trazbon. We had no problems with borders or police (i would highly recommend not speeding in the Ukraine, we saw many speed traps but never got stopped).
Highlights for me were Transalpina and Transfargan pass in Romania, Arabat Spit in Ukraine, Caykara to Bayburt, Road of Stones, Cappadocia in Turkey, greek mountains, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Dolomites and Alps. If i can be of help just ask. Andy B |
Was there specific reason why you did not make it to Georgia? That country is the biggest questionmark I have right now...
|
There is no legal boader crossing from Russia to Georgia they are still in war and boaders are closed. If you want to go around Black Sea you must go also go around Caspian Sea.
|
Yes, but hopefully they will get through with their negotiations by next summer. I saw some news on that they have been around the table on this.

Hi, Russia - Georgia border has been closed for a number of years. You can access Georgia through Turkey which was the original plan but we were a few days behind shcedual by the time we reached Trazbon and didn't go. A decision i now regret. Andy B
