Borrowed US Bikes to Mexico?
 

I'm trying to plan a trip to copper canyon with my brothers and dad. One of my brothers does not have a bike a the moment but can borrow a Transalp from a friend of mine. Will he be able to cross the border with a title from someone else? And what about insurance?

ithink i would do your research a bit. from my experience it would be best to have the bike transfered into your brothers name temporarily which is usually only a small fee. if the bikes not in his name, nor the insurance it could raise questions both ways on the border and ESPECIALLY at the military check points. i've been shook-down at gunpoint there because i only had photo copys of my insurance (until my dad arrived 5 minutes later on his bike with the originals) and was accused of smuggling marijuana. i dont know if i would chance it.

u can buy insurance for the bike at the border or online.

The best and easiest is to have the vehicle owned by the rider (even if it is only temporary). Second best is a notarized, signed permission statement from the owner allowing the bike to be taken into Mexico. Have the VIN written in the statement, the license plate number and list Mexico specifically, and double check that the numbers were typed correctly in the statement. A typo could screw up your entire trip.

A friend of mine rode to the BMW ralley in Monterrey last Oct. He had dealer plates and his company name is the same as his last name. They held him at the boarder for a full day before giving him the permits. Mexico is the stickiest country i've travelled through when it comes to paperwork. BEWARE! Officials will try to extort money from you for the slightest reason. For example, on my registration, the AirCare Expiry entry was left blank because motorcycles are exempt in BC. This later cost me a $20 bribe to get an official to write me a letter saying this was the case and my registration was indeed valid. I'm sure the bribe was later shared with the person who denied my reg. in the first place. I would just get the bike registered in your name, and don't leave any spaces blank.
