Buy Bike Nepal and Sell in Europe Carnet Deposit Release

Hello everyone,
I'm a New Zealander planning a world trip next year. I will be going by yacht and bicycle through south-east asia to Katmandu where I hope to buy a motorbike to go the rest of the way to Norway where I will be living for a year or two.

I know people have done this before but just a little confused on how it's possible to have your Carnet deposit released without having to return the motorbike to Nepal. I would probably plan to sell the bike in Europe.

Appreciate any help!

I thought you would just need to have the number of carnet entries equal to the number of carnet exits at the time you wanted to cash it in. If you buy a vehicle in a particular country, you won't need to invoke the carnet until you enter the next country that requires one.

If Europe did require a carnet then yes, you would have a problem.

Do you think you will be able to sell a Nepalese bike in Europe anyway having regard for emissions and engineering rules and regulations.

Okay thanks Tony.

Not too worried about whether I can sell it or not. My main concern was just with being able to get my Carnet deposit back after checking out of the last carnet country on my trip.

The New Zealand AA have told me that if I were to take a New Zealand Registered bike over, my carnet deposit would not be returned until I return the bike to New Zealand (or the Bike is stolen or crashed).

As i'm buying a bike in Nepal I'm guessing this same rule applies. If so, it sounds like there's ways around it!

Thanks for the help, appreciate any clarification on this.

Luke

I'm a long way from this problem right now but will encounter it at some point in mid 2017 and a, looking ahead to help me in my route planning. Malaysian bike planning to sell in Turkey (that's apparently impossible) or getting to the EU.

If you get a definitive answer I'd appreciate you posting it up. ;-)

Hi lukenz,

this is not directly the answere to your question, but I don´t think, that you can buy a bike in Nepal and take it out of Nepal/India.
At least that´s what all those riders told us in Nepal, that had bought a bike over there. You are limited to these two countries - even with a carnet.
But I can guarantee the correctness of this information.

Regards

Panny
