Buying a bike in Colombia, selling in Chile
Hi, I'm currently planning a trip to ride from Colombia down to Chile. I have a place in Colombia set to buy the bike from. I'm wondering about selling once I get to the end in Chile. I've read a lot of conflicting information online about whether it's possible or not and most of the similar threads here are over a decade old. I'm wondering if anyone has done something like this recently and can advise whether it's possible to do. Even if I have to take a significant loss on selling the bike, that's fine, better than nothing.
The options I've read about online are: 1. Selling to someone in Chile (possibly illegal and impossible?) 2. Selling to an importer/someone who will do the import themselves (will not give you much for the bike but saves you the headache of doing the import) 3. Selling to another motorcycle traveler (potentially the best option if I can coordinate timing with someone) Can anyone confirm if they have done any of these methods recently and what the process was like? Thanks |
I know this is an old post, but maybe it'll help:

Your best bet is to sell to another traveler. About 4 months before you want to sell it, start advertising on the various overlander Facebook groups. let them know you are selling in Chile, but it's availabe in 4 months, and approx number of km on it. You will have to write a PODER (Power of Attorney) to give them permission to drive in all the countries. Normally, this transaction has to be done at a border crossing....YOU have to cancel the TIP, as it's in your name at the border...leave Chile, cancel the TIP....in between the two countries you hand the vehicle and PODER to the new 'buyers'. You CANNOT say anything in the PODER that they are the owners or that you sold the vehicle. You MAY...possibly....get away without having to go to the border...but it's the safest method. |
