CAA Carnet countires
Hi,
I couldn't find an open thread for this, so... I have just been getting the final polish done on my carnet with CAA (and the VERY helpful Suzanne Danis) and here is the info I got for the countires I want to visit. For South America, Suzanne said that while the carnet isn't technically required, you could have losts hassles without one. If you are getting one anyway, add the SA countires- they don't cost extra and I think they will help my border crossings since they always seem to love paperwork! So, once again, this is the CAA list and the reality on the ground may be different- especially in SA. Country Carnet required % of duty and taxes Yes or no For the Bond for financial guarantee Turkey, no, Stamped in Passport Syria, Yes, 200%, 0% Lebanon, Yes, 200%, 12% Jordan, Yes, 200%, 46% Egypt, Yes, 800%, 55% Sudan, No, Advance permission + bank guarantee required Ethiopia, No, Deposit of Duty Required Kenya, Yes, 200%, 78% Uganda, Yes, 150%, 100% Rwanda, No Tanzania, Yes, 150%, 100% Malawi, Yes, 150%, 100% Zambia, No, Temporary Importation permit issued at the border Botswana, Yes, 150%, 29% Namibia, Yes, 150%, 29% South Africa, Yes, 150%, 29% Argentina, Yes, 300%, 53 CIF Chile, Yes, 300%, 100% Uruguay, Yes, 300%, 100% Bolivia, No Peru, Yes, 300%, 49% Ecuador, Yes, 300%, 100% Columbia, Yes, 300%, 100% Panama, No, Written Undertaking at the border Costa Rica, No, Permit issued at the border Nicaragua, No, Temporary Importation done at the border Honduras, No, Permit is issued at the border Guatemala, No Mexico, No, Permit issued at the border ( must have a major credit card) Russia, No, Stamped in Passport Mongolia, No, Frontiers are closed to individual tourist vehicles Kazakhstan, No, Stamped in Passport |
I went thru' the same thing with Suzanne and she suggested getting one for C&S America. From all the riders on here, and those that I have spoken to, all say that it is not needed. Seems weird why she continues to recommend people getting it.

Thanks for copying that list DRad and posting it.
Do you know what the 800% in Egypt is for? I know we only had the 55% you mention (our highest carnet country was Tanzania at 100% of the value of the bike). For UK residents I believe the amount they have to pay is much higher but even 800% sounds high. |
