can I sell my UK bike to a dealer in France? Where will I ge
 

If I purchase a bike in UK and want to sell it at the end of my trip. What do you think my best chance of re-couping my money fast without taking too much of a loss would be. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks KB

I don't think a dealer in F would buy it outright. Selling a foreign rego bike will be obviously difficult, anyway. On top of that, you'll want to sell it at the end of the season.

Best thing to do if you want to go this route is to get the "Certificat de conformité" from the French importer and try to sell the bike with that. A friend of mine did this for a Honda CX500 he bought of us a couple of years ago. Took about a month and cost 100€ (to Honda!). With this paper the rego should be a mere formality.

If you have a model that's popular here (anything jap sports, supermoto, BMW GS, R or RT) then I suggest selling here on the Riviera, as the season lasts all year round.

Yoiu could put it into a "Dépot de Vente". They will try to sell it on behalf.

However, if you arrive with a Suzuki DR650SE in reasonable condition I have a keen buyer for you! GB rego and all.

Thanks Beddist, I am thinking it would be easier and more effective to sell it in the UK but I wont have a lot of time on departure. I will probably take a bit of a loss but it will still be worth it. The end of the season is also working against me, (late September). I m leaning towards the BMW and hopefully will get in for a good price.

I'm thinking about buying an BMW 1100GS. To do so, I'll have to sell my R80GS, which I hope to do soon. I'm also considering selling my K100, the extra cash raised will allow me to go for an 1150. If you're interested in my K100, let me know & I'll e-mail a few photo's?

What beddist didnt tell you(he probably was a bit unsure or unaware, though he probably meant well!) is that the Conformity regulations are sometimes applied fiercely, down to the make of tyre recommended by the bike manufacturer, etc etc.

Just be aware that you cannot register a bike in France which has more than 100bhp.

Boddhist has suggested you put your bike in a Depot de Vente. He should have told you, but didnt, that these Depots are where people sell pots and pans, old furniture,junk and bric a brac. Please think carefully about his advice in this respect - I'd be worried if you followed it. I'm sure it was well meant....

There is quite a thriving ex-pat community in France. If you can find the right web-sites and forums to advertise you may well find you can line up an interested buyer for a UK registered bike, at the end of your journey, before you set off.

Lots of good info here, but at the end of the trip if you don't have much time perhaps you should rent, rather than buy. Otherwise there is Ebay...
