Carnet and stolen bike
A simple but very important question:
What happens if,during my travel in a place requesting the carnet de passage, (IRan) my bike is stolen? I read the NewYork convention of 1954 and it seems that i'm going to loose the deposit (12.000 EUR for my BMW !!!) and my touring association is confirming that. That seems strange to me, as the fact that a bike can be stolen is not often.. but it MAY happen... and loose 12.000EUR should not happen in my life!!! Carnet are used every day by travellers, so it seems that i'm forgetting something. Probably this "loss" due to a bike stolen can be insured... or what else? Is my first trip in a country requiring Carnet and I'm already changing my mind not to go... HELP!!! ------------------ StreetHawk -= BMW R1150GS =- |

The first thing to remember is not to panic. Stay cool! Carnet's are no big deal, except for the deposit. If your bike is stolen, immediately have the police file an official report. With this you can approach your guarantor, who will impose a waiting period (perhaps one year), after which time you should get your money back. But the main thing is not to get the damned thing stolen. Take the bike to bed with you, if need be. You might get to like its body odour, and the bike likewise. Enjoy your travels. No need and no fun to be paranoid. |

I also have a carnet. Its way to big! I paid for insurance to cover the bond. If the bike is stolen or destroyed in an accident I need to have a police report to explain why the bike had not left the country and why duties should not be paid. I will use the Werner method to try to safeguard the bike. |
The standard has always been in effect
"if the bike is stolen, report it to the police and get full documentation from them. No problem with the carnet guarantee IF the police are happy." Read Article 25bis in the carnet agreement at link noted above. "Article 25 bis The competent Customs authorities shall not require payment of import duties and import taxes where it is proved to their satisfaction that a vehicle imported under cover of temporary importation papers can no longer be re-exported because it has been destroyed or irrecoverably lost for reasons of force majeure." Geez, if you live in Italy, and your bike has not been stolen already, then you are obviously an expert in motorcycle security and have nothing to worry about anywhere else in the world.
