Carnet card expiry
The carnet card expires one year after...??? first use? or after date of purchase? If I buy the carnet in May and ride through Mexico and South America then Europe where I still don't need the card which will be somewhat more than a year, Is the card renwable for a small fee or what happens? I have heard that I must buy it from the Canadian Auto Assoc and that I cannot buy it from them unless I am in North america.
So the questions again: 1. Can I renew the card? 2. When does the one year validity begin, first use, or date of purchase? Thanks, joe |
The carnet has a ”start date” and it’s valid for one year after the start date.
Example: You can get your carnet in February 2008 and get a “start date” in May 2008, your carnet will be valid to May 2009. I think the process of renewing the Carnet is different from country to country. Here the price is around €250 for another year and it involves some paperwork. |
Thank you Alibaba. This is the best piece of information possible concerning carnet cards.

Carnet in Europe
On the website of the German Automobile Club is some good information, also in English. ADAC - Ihr Partner in allen Fragen rund um die Mobilität. (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) - Mitgliedschaft - Pannenhilfe - Routenplaner - Tests - Versicherungen - Kreditkarten - Finanzierungen - Autovermietung . Even though I am not living in Germany I could get our Carnet with them. They can supply it only one month before starting date.
