Carnet de Passage for African countries
Dear friends
My arrangements for the trip from Pretoria (South Africa) to Dubai is coming along fine. But I picked up one huge stumbling block: Egypt! More specifically, the Carnet de Passage costs involved. Bearing in mind that I will merely ride through each country by bike, it seems like this is posing a problem to get the deposit back. My options are: 1. Buy the correct CdP here in South Africa for all the countries needed and pay up to 200% of the value of my bike for the Egypt CdP 2. Buy TIP (temporary import permits) at each country where it is allowed. Apparently not all countries allows this. So; I really need advice from fellow travelers that did the trip. a) What is the most cost effective solution? Especially Egypt? b) Is there a way to miss Egypt by taking a ferry to cross the Red sea from either Sudan or Eritrea into Saudi Arabia or Yemen? c) Further to this; I read on a forum (not this one) that Egypt is not allowing any bikes to enter. Is that true? Thank you for the assistance!?c? Jan |

Can you provide a link to this information? As far as I know motorbikes are currently restricted only from entering the Sinai peninsula. |
Hi Pagan
No; it was one of the many that popped up on the Google search. Will check and if I see it again, will post the link. |
Yes Egypt is a rip of also because the officials were in such a bad mode. On my way down i had a normal Carnet wich expired after one year. For my long way home I found another solution: http://afrikamotorrad.eu/?report=en_...te&design=dark in Africa everything is possible...

dubai to Capetetown
Jan - I did it the other way around from Dubai to Capetown alonthe east Coast and went through Yemen. unfortunate this is not possible now as its to dangerous. we got a small cow boat from Mukalla in Yemen to Djibouti.
i heard more recently from other travelers that this can be done from Dar Al salaam and Djibouti to Sallalah in Oman and this is well worth investigating. Saudi will not allow bikes to transit the country we were asked for the Carnet in all the African countries |
Thank you for all the replies.
Seems like: 1. The CdP is a must have 2. Kairo is a no-go 3. Yemen is a no-go 4. Via Somalieland is the way to go. Thanks again! |
