Carnet for japan
 

Is a carnet for Japan strictly necessary? I would be entering from Sakahlin.

I have heard that it is possible if entering by ferry (and ONLY by ferry).
Met some Canadians a couple years ago who entered at Wakkanai from Sakhalin without using a carnet (although they did have one). To be on the safe side, though, I wouldn't want to try with a day left on my Russian visa just and no way to attempt an alternative route.
