Carnet question
 

Hello, I am currently on a RTW trip and in Japan at the moment.
Unfortunately I've had an accident, and repairing the bike will obviously cost some time.
Now I have entered with a Carnet 2 weeks ago, and the intended date for leaving is the 28th. However while that might be just enough to get my bike fixed I won't be able to see the rest of Japan.

The Carnet is still valid for another 11 months, however the "intended departure date" on the page bothers me a bit.
Will I get into trouble if I stay longer than that, do I have to contact the JAF to extend it in some way?

You do say intended date and that was your intention a the time. I don't see a problem.

Well yes, that would be the obvious thing to do. And I did ;)

However communications are difficult at best, there's only 1 phone number I've been able to find and no English speaking person on the other side of the line and I unfortunately do not speak any Japanese beyond the very basic Hello, goodbye, yes - no and thank you.

I was hoping someone else would have had a similar experience.
Not hoping for a crash ofcourse, but you get the point.

The phone is great .. if you can speak the language. :frown: If you cannot ... you want face to face.

Are you near where you entered or leave from?
Failing that the nearest physical office.
Go there in person .. and ask face to face. Speak slowly. Small words.

The legal temporary import permission is for 6 months or 1 year (I can't remember which, and I don't feel like looking it up unless absolutely necessary).
What is the "Period of Validity" on your "Application for an Authentication of the Carnet" form? If it is before the date you intend to leave, contact JAF. If not, don't worry.

From JAF Website:
No extension of the validity of CPD is authorized by the Customs authority, unless the holder of the CPD provides sufficient evidences that the vehicle in question is unable to be re-exported from Japan within the validity of the CPD.

If it is being repaired, I think that is good enough reason.

I'm just outside of Saitama. Bike is fixed now, despite cosmetic damage and an extra fueltank I will not be able to use, it handles as if new.
Yes, the actual Carnet itself expires in about 11 months (Period of Validity)
"The expected date and place the the car is to be exported" is in about a week. I originally estimated about 4 weeks in Japan (hence the expected export date), which I now realise, is way too short even if you don't waste a week trying to find a way to fix your bike.

I've found someone to kindly call JAF on my behalf. And after being called back twice, they told her I do not need to wory as long as it's out of the country before the Carnet expires. Which is wonderful news!
