Carnet in South Africa, Namibia and Botswanna
 

Anybody have info of carnet requirements for South Africa, Namibia and Botswanna?

Also, is it ever possible to actually sell a motorcycle overseas, particularly South Africa?

Hey kevin,
i just finiched a trip starting/ending in J'burg via namibia and bots.Beside the passport there was no need of any additional docs. (I'm german running on an South African numberplate, wonder if that makes a difference). Anyway, what's the question about selling the bike in S.A.??Paperwork,Prices,advertise possibilities etc???By the way, what's your plan??

A great source for this info would be David Fischer. He runs "Tours for Africa." They run tours through Africa all year. They might also have a little clout with the local AA. Search the web for the company name and drop him an email.

He could also give you a few insides on places to see, stay etc... He knows the area very, very well

A carnet is not required in those three countries. They also have a common customs agreement, once you're in one, the rest are no problem.

Re selling your bike, it is possible to sell it in South Africa, but I don't know if it is possible to sell it to a local or not. Selling to an overlander who wants to ride it back to your country would be the ideal! David may be able to give more info.

There is a market for overlanders to sell vehicles and equipment, primarily for the 4 wheel drivers. I THINK it's in Cape Town, but don't know for sure.

You DO need a carnet for South Africa when driving a foreign registered bike.
Grant is right about the customs union between SA - Nam.- Bots. But entering from 'outside' into one of these three,results in being asked for the carnet at the first entry .Unless you enter by a very small borderpost (coming from or Swaziland or Zimbabwe) where the oficials are not used to non south african vehicles....
A couple of years ago I had my carnet stamped in Botswana (Kazangula) and after overstaying the validity of the carnet it only took the SA customs 2 weeks to send my AA the claim !!!
