Carnets etc: How to cross borders when the driver is not the owner?
Hi folks
Does anyone have any experience with driving a vehicle across borders (specifically in Africa) with the following scenario? Bob is the owner of the vehicle, it is his name which is in the registration document. It is also Bob's name in the carnet. For the first part of the trip, Bob won't be around, so John will be driving the vehicle. John will have a letter from Bob stating that John has his permission to drive the vehicle across borders. Is this possible? What will John need to ensure he is not turned back from borders? Thanks in advance! |
I did the same thing
I crossed the whole of Africa and home to England on a bike that was in someone else's name as was the Carnet. I carried a letter of authorisation from the named owner, but no-one ever asked to see it. They just took the Carnet at each border and stamped me in.
However, that was 10 years ago. I've heard it's still possible. Good luck. |
Hi folks
For 3 years I've used my Defender registered on leasing firm. I have always permision to use car written and translated on English, Arabic, Farsi and Russian. It is enough. Many times I crossed all Europe, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Iran, Tunesia, Libia, Armenia, Georgia and I haven't any problems. Sometimes custom even didn't look in my translations. Don't worry and go.
