cheaper to ship or buy in Oz?
 

My wife & I both ride. I a Harley Road King, she a Shadow ACE 750.

Would it be cheaper for us to ship the bikes and pay what fees are required for about a year, or to buy/register, etc. in Oz?:confused1::santa:

A new Road King, on the road downunder, won't give you much change out of Aus$35,000 (US$27,000).

Brouse through www.bikesales.com.au or www.bikepoint.com.au and you make the call. Theres possibly more Harleys per capita in OZ than the US. So there are plenty to choose from second hand. On top of purchase costs, you have to pay stamp duty which will be 1 - 4 % of purchase cost depending on the state that you register it in. Then you have various registration and insurance fees etc that will run to about 4 -600 dollars per year. All swings and round abouts I guess. Oh, you will also need an address in Oz for registration purposes. Not particularly difficult to do. If you make it this way give us a bell. The good wife and I spent a year in North America in 84 touring about on a 81 Low Rider, all good fun!!

Well, I guess it would be cheaper to ship and pay the duty/carnet, etc. My bike here was about $30,000Cdn. I was thinking of buying there, then selling before we leave, but I guess I would have to come up with an extra $30000. Likely not to happen.
So does anyone know what the duty and carnet etc would cost on $30,000?

Errr you either pay for the Carnet OR the duty .. not both ...

Duty .. well that would be over 10% of the value of the bike ..

Carnet .. may be better off organising this in Canada .. the US is reportedly not so good at it.

Thank you Frank. I'll eventually get all the info we need. And we will definitely get all we can done here in Canada before leaving. When I mentioned Duty, I guess I was thinking Customs tax. Is there a difference?
