China Entry

Hi everyone

I have read the countless pages on trying to enter China but cannot find any good news. I was wondering if anyone has had any success in entering post olympics on a bike and how you managed it.

My plan is to enter from Laos and exit into Kyrgyzstan.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

The problem is the paperwork... it costs money and time. We didn't have either and weren't prepared to pay quoted US$800 perday (as there were no tour groups we could join to bring down the price).

We tried in 2009 entering from Laos at Muhan border for 3 days camping infront of immigration unsucessfully. Read about it in our journal here.

All I can say is if you want to take your bike it will cost $$$$

Save the hassle and go elsewhere or buy in China and ride like Gary from Oz did.

Yep, seems like it is actually possible. The problem is it´s a mountain of "red tape", and could just about double your mortgage! And this of course refers to doing it the ´official way´ - the odds of managing to just sneak in are quite slim, as the previous poster testifies. There were some reports of riders managing to do that some years ago, but mostly from Kazakhstan. Crossing entire China that way (=illegally) would be yet another challenge I think.

I know of one guy, who managed to enter ´unofficially´ from Laos 3-4 years ago. But his bike was registered in China (he bought it in Thailand or Laos) and that probably made a big difference. He wrote some brilliant ride reports from that trip into the gt-rider dot com forums.

I'm interested in doing the same trip. While I really dont like the concept of a huge group tour, I think getting a few people together is the only cost-effective solution to gettng across china, Laos to the stans. Anyway, I have been thru the forums and it seems like there are a few people with similar interests. I am probably lookin to leave march/april. I actually have a bike in Cambodia, which I wanted to take, however, there is one problem to that - Cambodia doesnt issue the carnet. So looks like I have to buy and register a bike in australia, and ship. Blah!

anyway....hey, maybe allofus can hook up.

cheers,
regie

Entering and traveling in China keeps us bussy for Years already. I really like to plan a trip trough this amazing country as well, but i'm facing the same questions. A bike registered in the Netherlands and like to cross the the asian continent, thats included China as well. I keep a eye on every question about this subject.

g'day rick,

no worries.

i'm in oz now and tied up for the next couple months. after that i hope to go back to cambodia for a ride. i have a bike there, and currently negotiating on buying a new one - yamaha wr250r - in cambodia.

i've been writing to and fro with another aussie in a different thread - he also seems pretty interested in china.

i'm in-between jobs at the moment and if nothin comes up in the next 2 months i will be going on this ride. even if something is offered i will try to negotiate a start date, and do the ride. i'm pretty keen for this trip.

cheers,
happy travels,
regie
