Conflicting info about leaving bike in Central Americas.
 

Hello to all, i have read in "sticky" that all CA countries require you to leave with temp. imported vehicle. Yet another thread its mentioned you may leave bike behind as long as you return before tvip expires... Any one have solid experience with this? I will be riding south sometime before Christmas, but may possibly need to fly to Peru during bike trip. Dont know which country i may be in by the time i need to fly, so any info you can share is welcomed:) Thanks and safe travels.

It seems some countries you'll get away with just leaving and coming back before the TIP expires, where-as in other countires you'll have to formally suspend the TIP - i.e. Panama - Overland Panama Travel - WikiOverland

As Dan said, the universal rule is that unless you get special dispensation, you must drive your vehicle and pretty much stick with it until you drive it out over the border.
There is an Aduana post in Central America - called David I think on ioverlander where you can suspend your TIP and pay them $1 a day for storage. Other places have similar systems but much more expensive storage options. Peru also allows you to suspend your TIP if you have a good reason to temporarily leave the country. Note that the TIP is suspended, not cancelled and then renewed.

People leave their vehicles behind in Argentina for months and nobody seems to care BUT I know one who asked if they could leave the car in BA while they crossed to Uruguay on the ferry for a couple of days and they were refused permission. As always there is the law that is written and then there is the law that is enforced.

Leaving a bike in CA
 

Hi, we left our bike in Panama at the Aduana bond store in the northern city of David. They cancelled the passport stamp and sorted the paperwork. Cost was $1 a day for the first month and $2 thereafter. We left the bike for 8 months but only paid $360 to get it back. The store is secure and indoors. The bike was exactly where I left it when we returned except covered with dust. All good and perfectly legal. Mike Hannan Elephant Home
