Different nationalities and vehicle paperwork??
Hi All
A quick background, I have dual nationality (South African/British) and will be doing my trip on both passport. I am however currently in Australia and will be doing the trip with a vehicle registered in Australia. So my question is, will this cause any problems at border crossing with a vehicle registered in Oz and with me not being Australian? Countries I'll be going to will be from Eastern Russia, throught the Stans to London and then down the east coast of Africa to Cape Town. I know with Egypt for example, with a british reg car and carnet it is 800% ofr something silly like that, but with an oz carnet it is only 200%. My concern is that when I get to the border and they see I'm travelling on brit/SA passport they will want to apply the 800%(:eek3: ) even though it should be 200% because it is an Oz registered car with Oz carnet...???:confused1: Any help/advice much appreciated. Thanks Pumbaa |
I also have dual nationality, English/American. I've been using my UK passport for years (for obvious reason). For the past two years I've been driving through Central/South America, with a vehicle which is US registered. No problems.
I don't advise switching passports back and forth. I've done this previously and it's just a headache. I'd stick with your English one since it's less obscure. You want the trip to be easy. Yes, the Oz carnet might be cheaper in Egypt, but what about the other countries? Can't advise on this part. Lorraine |
Travelling on a German passport I have used NZ and now French rego with a German carnet and nobody has ever bothered me about it. But, I've never been to Africa, except Morocco.

Just make sure that the car/bike registration and the carnet are in the same name, i.e. the drivers name! This is essential. Any discrepancy in this and you are screwed in Egypt.

Thanks for the replies so far. I thought that it probably won't be a problem, but you never know. The carnet will be in my name as well as the car reg, thanks for the advice!!!
From memory, Egypt will be the most expensive on our carnet for our proposed route. We were going to go through India and iran and their carnet value for oz reg car is 400% and 470%. We have however decided not to go that way for now... |
