Do I need insurance for EU?
Probably been asked a million times. But do I actually need insurance for a trip through Europe. Looking at costs for my trip and trimming the budget. I'm only going to be in Europe for 5-6 weeks tops, so I don't really want to pay insurance if I really don't need it.
I drive like a pensioner, i'm not a speed freak, I realise the biggest risk would be other road users but I have to weigh up paying £200 for 6 weeks cover?!? Any advice much appreciated. |
I believe a 3rd party insurance is compulsory in almost every EU country. Not that you´re likely to be checked very often, but I still wouldnt ride/drive without one.

Looking at your post it has you down as based in Scotland which is (just about) in the EU. If you have current UK insurance then it will automatically extend to cover the minimum insurance requirement in any EU country without any additional costs. This applies to all EU citizens - the insurance is extended to cover their vehicles in other EU countries automatically (but, like I said above - only for the minimum requirement of the country being visited). |
Hmm, I'm leaving in April which is when my insurance premium is due to renewal, I'll give them a phone and ask if they could extend it for a few months to cover me through Europe, thanks for the advice, food for thought.

Yes you do need insurance.
To ride uninsured is reckless and irresponsible. It’s enough hassle when some idiot smashes into you without then finding out that the idiot isn’t insured and has no way of paying for the £4,000 worth of damage they caused to your vehicle and the 16 weeks that you couldn't work because of your injuries. Flinkman - yes you do need insurance and yes, if you have UK insurance you will automatically be covered throughout not only the EU but also the other countries in the Green Card scheme. Bear in mind that this is just 3rd party. For comprehensive (or even TPFT) you will need to speak to your insurance co. Anything beyond 3rd party isn't required by law.
Big Yellow Tractor - you sound like you were speaking from experience. Have you not heard of the Motor Insurers' Bureau? |
