Drive to Turkey from London
Hello,
I hope this is the right forum for this question: We as a family would like to drive to Iran from UK and back within 6 weeks. 1- Suggestions on driving in Turkey with british number plate. Is it ok? safe? 2- safest route to drive from west to east towards the turkey/Iran border? 3- What documents/policies required to drive through Turkey? p.s. we did a 3500 miles in summer 2017 from UK to croatia and back so a little familiar with the countries up to that point of the world :-) And anything else you consider useful for me to know. Thank you |
There's a ferry going to Mersin/Eastern Turkey. That would save you many kms. just driving to get there. From Mersin it isn't very far to the Iranian border. Roughly 1,000 kms.
I felt quite safe with my German registered bike. But make sure you keep out of any political discussions :nono: Being (still) an EU country I reckon there shouldn't be any difference between UK and German regos. Although I felt that the Turk secret service didn't like the Germans for current political reasons. At every road block there were regular police in uniform and two or three scruffy looking civilians who most certainly were secret service guys. |

You will need a Carnet to get into Iran even though it is supposed to be theoretically possible to get in under a TVIP, plus British have to arrange a full-time escort while in Iran (see http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ide-cost-94085 ).
Mandatory insurances you can get at the borders. Perhaps your current insurance can be endorsed to give insurance for Turkey like the EU green cards can. |

My current AA membership covers the car till the european side of turkey i.e near istanbul. There is no company that I have found which covers beyond istanbul i.e. all turkey. SO then I called the turkey automobile touring commpany. They said at the border I can get insurance for the whole country but not breakdown cover. Not sure where to get breakdown cover for the whole of turkey. |
Can't help with breakdown cover. I'm with ADAC so assumed a phone call to Germany would have worked just as it did in Morocco.
Your post said drive TO Iran, but are you just going to Turkey? Nothing about going to Turkey is out of the ordinary. Border procedures are simple provided you get the visa on-line, get the liability insurance at the border if necessary, get registered for the toll roads if you want to use the tollways as there is no pay at the booth system, and enjoy getting woken at 4:15 am by the three or four mosques within loudspeaker range. |
Hello.
ADAC in Germany said I have to be living in Germany to get membership. I live in London. I have not found a company that covers for breakdown for whole of turkey. They did say that at the European border I will be able to get accident insurance but no breakdown cover. The next problem I face is that it seems I have to have carnet de passage to cross to Iran and you can not cross without one for our drive of four weeks. Thankyou |
