Driver's Licence for Iran

i am in the planning stages of a motorcycle trip through Central Asia. I am for all intensive purposes American and we know the issues with Americans traveling in Iran, but...
I have Irish passport to use while traveling and I plan on buying and registering motorcycle in the EU for this trip. But...
The one piece of paperwork where i'm stuck with is the DL. I only have US drivers licence and the process to get a DL in the EU seems a bit involved. So my question to the forum is has anyone traveling overland in Iran been asked to provide a drivers licence? Is an IDP acceptable on it's own?

Technically an IDP is only valid with the original licence as it basically a translation document, however I think you'll get away with it.

Unless you get someone pissed off, and then you could have a BIG problem - personally I wouldn't push my luck. Get an Irish DL. You will have to hand in your US license, but you can renew that when you get home. And I would not carry my US passport with me through a country that doesn't want me. Better safe than very sorry in jail.
