Driving Overseas
Hi
I'm a UK citizen, and want to take a bike overseas next summer. How long doe one need to have held a full Motorbike license to ride in another country (specifically Africa)? Does it vary between countries? Cheers Dan |
Why do you think a FULL licence does NOT allow you to drive the vehicle for which you hold the licence? That's the idea of a licence, isn't it?
You get a translation of it in the form of the International Licence, showing exactly what vehicles you are allowed to drive in all the countries that are signatories to the relevant treaty. ------------------ Salut from Southern France, the bikers' paradise, Peter. |
and if you go into your local AA shop they will be able to supply you with a international driving permit if you need 1 .

what part of africa are you thinking of going to dan ??

Daniel:
In most African countries, a bottle of Scotch or a $20 bill will get you a licence to drive whatever you want. I still have a Mozambique Airline Transport Pilot Licence somewhere in my collection of African documents - along with a Liberian driver's licence, etc., etc. |
In reply to two posts above, all of it, pretty much. Sept 2005 I will start. My hypothetical route is to start in Tunisia, cross the Sahara, go round west Africa, then Chad, then South from Cameroon to South Africa, then round East Africa, Ethiopia, Djibouti. Then either Yemen or Eritrea / Sudan depending on the visa sitation. From there on, it totally depends on money, I may continue north through the Caucuses / central Asia, or may have to go home. Anyway.. still just an idea really, need to get a bike first!
