Entering Mongolia from Russia
I've read that it is necessary to pre-inform the Mongolian border authorities that you are going to bring a vehicle into the country. I tried the Mongolian embassy for more details but didn't get a reply. Has anyone done this and if so, how do you do it? I plan to enter at Tashanta. Any help appreciated.

Never heard of that before. I went through that border last year without any real trouble. I turned up with a massive group from the Mongol rally so the hardest part was convincing the guards I wasn't part of the rally and only wanted a temporary import. No trouble at all once they realised that and no advance notice given.

Not heard of that either. I crossed last year at Altanbulag with my bike.

Not the case for me nor anyone else I spoke to at Tashanta in 2012.

Local knowledge!
Cheers for the info guys. The following is copied from the FCO website...."If you are planning to bring a vehicle into Mongolia at any of the border crossings you should inform the tax authorities and border troops in advance."

Yep, best advice with the FCO is to ignore them

The two most bogus sources of info for motorcycle travellers are the Foreign Office and Lonely Planet.
Ignore both of them unless they line up with all other sources. |
Latest update?
Hi All
I am an Indian and would be entering Mongolia at the Tashanta border in a couple of month's time. Do I just get to the border and ask for the permit? Any charges on the temporary permit? If at all I get a carnet, can I manage without the temporary import permit? Thanks! |
