EU registered van in UK?

As a UK citizen, how easy is it to buy a European registered van (in mainland Europe) for use in the UK? Is there a time limit until it would need to be registered with DVLA, or could I just pop back with it when I needed to? And which countries would be best to buy one? I was thinking Baltic/Balkan areas.

Reasons? I want something for traveling in Europe itself (and beyond) as well as for use at home. Also like the idea of giving lifts to backpackers for a share of the road costs. Positive and negative thoughts all welcome. Thanks.

Not allowed?

A bit of research shows that an EU vehicle is allowed in for 6 months of a 12 month period, BUT UK residents are not allowed to use a foreign registered vehicle on UK roads unless employed/self-employed in another EU member state, or, uses a EU registered company car temporarily in the UK for business purposes".

With neither being the case with me, does that mean I'd be stuck at Dover I wonder? Any thoughts, links welcome.
