Europe to Mongolia - Paperwork Help
Hi everyone !
I currently live in VIENNA, AUSTRIA. and i bought a 2007 Yamaha xt125r with the intention of riding it across to Mongolia next year. :mchappy: *I am NOT a european citizen ! I have trouble getting started with the paperwork of what i would actually need and what is legal and illegal. I will ride with EU licence plate, and i will have a regular insurance for riding in Europe (last time i was insured by ZURICH insurance company) *however when i am done with my trip i intend to sell the bike in Mongolia can someone please help me with the followings : 1. am i allowed to sell the bike (that was bought in Austria) with EU licence plate in Mongolia? 2. what kind of insurance will i need for countries like Kazakhstan and Russia and Mongolia ? is there a all-around insurance ? where can i get it? (at the borders or i need in advance?) I would appreciate any help given! this is going to be my biggest motorcycle adventure in my LIFE and i want to do it right and legal. |
For Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia you can buy the bike insurance at the borders. It is easy and cheap.
Note that if you plan a very small border, there may be no possibility, but at all major borders, you will be able to find insurance and money changers. In small very remote borders, you may need to get prepared in term of currency and buy insurance at the next town. For example the border between Shemonaikha (KAZ) and Zmeinogorsk (RU - Altai) is tiny and I am pretty sure there was nothing. Definitely nothing at all on the most eastern border between KYRGYZ and KAZ. If you are going to get in and out of Russia /KAZ just get cover for the whole period. We did that last year as we got in and out of russia 3 times so bought insurance for 3 months and 2 months for KAZ, on first entry. cheers. |
Thanks a lot maria !
the main problem that i am facing is selling the bike in mongolia. is it possible ? and what about the european licence plate on the bike? i cant ride back to europe just to cancel my insurance :/ |
I have no idea about selling the bike.
Last year, few weeks behind us, was an American lad called Patrick, with who I was in contact with, via email, and few other chaps. He had a bad crash in Mongolia and had to fly back to the US. I think he sold his bike in Mongolia, but you will have to investigate that. I don't understand why you worry about the licence plate or cancelling insurance? Something specific to Austria? For us, (UK) if we got rid of a bike in Mongolia, set fire to it for example (thought of that one after breaking down one too many times!) going back to the UK we could just declare the bike scrapped and that's all and phone the insurance to cancel. easy.... IF you cannot sell it, you may see with Sambor if he can deliver your bike back home? He will pick up our bikes with his truck, from Kyrgyzstan, next summer. Check out his website for his itinerary and calendar: www.advfactory.com Cheers, |
Hi Maria.
Thank you so much for you taking the time and helping me out ! I entered the website and the cost of shipping a bike is the cost almost of the bike itself hahaha :) so i will try to find other solutions. The main issue i am having is in order to have a licence plate in Austria, you must have insurance. They will not give you a licence plate without. And for the time riding in europe i must have it. The problem is that if you want to cancel it (lets say.i reached Mongolia and now i want to fly back home) i must return the licence plate to the insurance company. They must recieve it, or otherwise they will keep charging me just because i have still the plates. I was talking to a policeman the other day, he said something about licence plate with expiration date. I dont know much about this... Has anyone done something similar to what i intend to do ? Selling a European bike in mongolia.? |
Don't know about selling a vehicle in Mongolia, theoretically you (or the buyer) would have to pay import duties but in practice..
As for the number plates, it's pretty easy : make a copy once you're out of EU (I mean, out of green card coverage, basically when you're in Russia) and send the original back to Austria, so that some friend can give it back and cancel the insurance. Local workshops should be able to stamp numbers out of a blank piece of aluminium. Many people (Swiss, ..) have the same problem and use that trick. As far as the russian/mongolian cops are concerned, they couldn't tell how a foreign number plate looks like so if the number checks out, you'll be fine. We actually lost the front number plate on our 4x4 in Mongolia; we eventually replaced it with a... cardboard with the number on it in Kaz after some cops moaned about it. Got a lot of laughs but no trouble afterwards :thumbup1: Cheers, Laurent PS: there's a small shack at the exit of the Shemonaika border post (Kaz side) selling insurance. |
Hey there, here in switzerland its the same deal, what most people do is get to turkey or lets say Ukraine depending on where you passing through and then pay to fake one or just paint it yourself and send it back to austria (the original one od corse) like the couple in the link.
