Expired local registration doc while on extended trip?
Hi all
Advice, please? We are leaving soon, from Dubai, heading into Africa, where we hope to import and register the bikes. While we are travelling enroute, our Dubai registration cards yearly date will lapse, so dates will be expired, but will still have the registration cards with us. We will be travelling on carnets. Can we expect any problems with this?? Cheers Lm |
Yes you can have a problem. The vehicle has to be legally registered at 'home' in order for you to use it elsewhere.
Contact your local registration authority ...mine advised getting the usual inspection done locally .. having it translated and sending that back to them. Best to get it in writing. Good luck. |
You want to import the bikes, but are travelling on carnets?

HiTim, yes, that's the plan.

As Warin says technically your vehicle should be legal in country of origin but in reality many travellers who are away for a long period especially over 12 months cannot maintain this often due to needing a safety check such as the UK MOT test. The only answer is to remove anything that is expired from the vehicle and keep quiet about it, customs officials rarely know what is required on foreign vehicles and are only interested in the carnet, the police are usually only interested in your driving licence or international driving permit and local insurance.
