Everyone, many thanks for your replies. They make me reasonably confident I should be able to organise the MOT test and get something to satisfy our local authorities.

In case you wonder why I'm bothering and not just photo-shopping a "new" up to date registration and saving the several hundred dollars my local registration costs (most of which is compulsory insurance which provides no coverage outside Australia) it is because in mid 2015 I want to get a carnet and I'm told the local provider may do a check with the local registration people to confirm registration is current. Anyone got any experience on this?

Anyway in a couple of months time I'll let you know how it all went.

I've had a couple of carnets on a NSW registered 4x4 but a few years ago (2009 - 2011). I had to provide proof of current rego when I got the carnets but on the second one my rego expired well before the carnet did and I didn't bother renewing. Either this wasn't checked or they didn't care as I got my money back when I discharged the carnet.

Speedo is not part of the MOT.. The bike doesn't even need one.

FFS, your bike doesn't even need an engine to pass an MOT... Seriously.

But what about section 13.13.13.13 : "If it's fitted it's got to work Mite" , section 13.13.13.13.a: "It's gotta have a ..... Mite" followed by section 13.13.13.13.b : "That Horns a bit strident Mite".

:innocent:

It's bollocks.... That's what it is.

There are so many testers out there can barely read a comic let alone the MOT manual.

I would encourage A LOT more people to contest their MOT failures with VOSA. A lot of people will fail bikes to gain business. It's happened to all of us I'm sure.

If your bike fails and you think it shouldn't have, take it elsewhere. If they pass it, then VOSA will accept that pass and refund you the fail. They will then investigate the garage that failed you. Well they should. But like many overstretched, dis-interested Government departments they don't really care as much as they should.

Didn't know you could contest a MOT with VOSA. A few years go the (ex-) wife had trouble getting her car through it's first MOT (car only 3 years old). In years 4 and 5 I took it instead of her and did my best "man of the people" (lots of burping/farting/swearing :thumbup1: ) impression while at the test station. The car passed.

PS. Took a bike (The shagged shed from Mongolia to Magadan: Any which (the hard) way - ADVrider ) for a MOT today and it passed: Didn't have to run the motor. Only needed the key to turn the ignition on so that the lights/horn could be checked. The rest was wheel/head bearings/ chain/ tyre tread and e mark/ suspension/ brakes/ spokes.

A quick update and conclusion - all successfully achieved.Yesterday I took the bike to a local bike shop (M&P in Gorseinon, Swansea) they did the MoT and emailed the certificate to the New South Wales registration authorities for me who have done confirmed that all is good and they'll now renew my registration (once my son pops in with $120).

Things learning during this process (1) make sure you get an email address direct to someone in the RMS office you are dealing with so the certificate can be sent through by the test garage, otherwise it will get lost in the generic customer service email box, and (2) no issues with the kph speedometer.

Thanks everyone for your info and advice - now ready to head of to Morocco in a few days. Yahoo!

I did this for a NSW reg Landcruiser. I did a roadworthy in Zambia and sent it to them. From memory, they issued the new rego with a comment about the inspection to be done on return.
No problems whatsoever. .,
