Green Card available on Turkish - Greece border for 15 euro
 

Ok, Now that I have your attention....a quick update on green card availability at the Turkish - Greece border, which is several hundred euros cheaper than Knoffs.

I managed to buy green card insurance at the Ipsala crossing for one year for 15 euros from a Turkish insurance company called Isvicre Sigorta.

As you pass the last customs post on the Turkish side, there is a smart new shopping complex (still on the Turkish side before the last exit gate) with a few duty free shops, cafe etc, and an insurance office. I presented myself at the insurance office, gave them a copy of my temporary 1 month Turkish third party insurance (which cost about US$3 for the month) and they proceeded to issue me with a 12 month green card valid for every country. They didn't even ask to see a copy of my non-Turkish registration papers.

So, that was rather lucky really.

And just a quick update on the numberplate situation, Simmo....have fixed a beauty out of a lunchbox lid tin and it hasn't been questioned yet.

That is good news. How much did they charge for 12 months insurance?

Sorry, i just read the post properly, i must be going blind.
That's about as cheap as it gets, i paid 22 euro a month in germany for the same thing.

I did get the impression the counter girl wasn't particularly clued up as to the whole process, but I wasn't going to argue.

Now, I am not sure if I would ever want to have to claim on the policy (or any Turkish insurance policy for that matter), but it certainly has all the offical stamps and looks impressive to show to the police if one is stopped!

I've had some dealings with a Turkish insurer and I would say that if they can they will avoid paying out to a foreigner. Although, within the countr I think the system probably works quite well. My opponents insurance insisted on dealing with my insurer. Only, I have only TP, so my insurer said "your problem".

But: I don't think they can not pay a claim against your TP policy, because I suspect that the International Green Card bureau would take a dim view of that. Perhaps they could withdraw their accreditation, membership, or whatever. In any case, that is NOT your problem, it is that of any future claimant against you. Hopefully, you will never damage anybody with your bike.

It never will be, as long as it shows the number in your rego papers. But, do get an oval AUS sticker or don't go to Austria. Instant fine for not having one.

But, I cant read turkish, so I dont know if they'll do mail order or not. Be cool ifn they do!

A green card is NOT an insurance, but a proof for you having insurance. in case of an accident the green card association will pay for any claims against you and then try to get the money back from your insurer. if it turns out you are not actually covered they'll sue YOU (happened to a friend of mine).

So.....what is it that the OP actually purchased for 15 euros per year? It cannot be that actual insurance--of any sort, size, shape or description--can cost so little. If it's really just a guarantee of insurance, what does that mean? Does the Green Card merely guarantee his existing insurance coverage, described as a temporary Turkish policy? Does it somehow guarantee this coverage throughout Europe?

I'm puzzled as well that he bought temporary Turkish coverage for $US 3 per month--about a tenth what I paid in Turkey, and far less than I've paid for insurance since approximately the mid-seventies. What did he really buy?

Inquiring minds want to know. Wild guesses, informed opinions and baseless pontificating equally welcome.

i bought insurance at the turkish border for a month to the tune of about 6 euros last year. They were worried i thought it was too expensife...no green card...i thought it was retardedly cheao though.
