Green card insurance ???

Ok guys and gals, anybody give me their opinions on wether or not I should get green card insurance ?
I've had a couple of quotes from companys listed on the board from about US$375 for 4 months from Motorcycle Sevices...seems like a lot of money for liability insurance !
However what are the general thoughts on its use and does anyone have an ideas for a cheaper soloution.

Many thanks
Steve

You want it for travelling in Europe?

If yes then Green Card seems to be the only optimum way. Be sure that you get the card where's all the countries written on you want to visit (some may not have)!

GC avoids lot of paperwork hassle in Europe and it should be easy to issue too for foreigners (at least for EU people it's a 5 minute stop in insurance company http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif ).

That does seem very expensive for coverage. Click on "M/C Insurance" on the left side of this page, then go to Knopf Tours. They list coverage for $35 for each 30 days. Perhaps that's an outdated rate (some of these entries are quite old), but it might be worth an email to Knopf to verify their current rate.

Please dont tell anyone else our sectret as I hate to admit to this......on our 2000 -2001 trip from Australia to France we didnt have any third party (gren card) insurance on our bikes. We had it in Singapore Malaysia and Thailand but that was it. This trip .....we have had it for Thailand..as it is so cheap and we will purchase it for Europe this time.....wont push our luck too far.
But getting back to the last journey, we were never asked to show insurance papers ....
Dont forget....dont tell anyone our secret.

A word of warning: GC is compulsory in Europe. A routine traffic check or a minor accident and the cops will want to see it. No GC = vehicle impounded.

Once inside Europe finding somebody who will insure your vehicle with a GC can be difficult. The German ADAC sells it for €22/day, but you have to appear in person with your bike papers. That's where Knopf Tours come in...

Don't chance it.

Has the ADAC rate gone up to € 22 a day for a motorcycle? I recall reading here a few years ago that it was € 25 a MONTH for a motorcycle (liability only, no theft, collision, etc.).

As for Motorcycle Services (they also trade under the names Motorcycle Express and Michael Mandell) - I have bought my European insurance coverage through them for 3 years in a row now. It is true that they are not cheap, but the service is excellent. I had a claim 2 years ago, and it was processed very rapidly and without any problems at all. The day after my accident, I was talking to the adjustor on the phone, and his primary concern was getting me back up and on the road as quickly as possible. I do recommend them to you, they are nice people to deal with, not cheap, but honest and efficient.

Also - I just remembered this - there is a BIG difference in the geographical coverage of the insurance provided by ADAC and by Motorcycle Express.

ADAC covers you for the EC countries only, plus Switzerland. Motorcycle Express covers you for everywhere from Iceland to Israel, with the sole exception (last year, anyway) of Bosnia and Iraq. If you are planning on visiting any of the countries that are not in the EC - for example, Croatia, Romania, Slovakia, Morocco, etc. - this is very important.

Motorcycle Express gives a discount (10%, I think) to members of the American Motorcycle Association. If you belong to the equivalent national motorcycle organization in your home country (meaning, whatever association is the representative of the worldwide FIM in your country), mention that on the phone, they might extend the same courtesy discount to you. You will need to submit documentation to prove your membership.
