Help with Insurance (shipping from Toronto, Canada to Norway)
I received this unfortunate reply from my insurance company today and I was really curious as how to navigate the insurance portion of the shipment and driving through Europe, middle east, and Russia.
"once a car leaves North America it can no longer be insured by us ( or any other North American insurance company that I’m aware of). The only people I’ve known who have shipped a car to Europe have done so because they are moving there. You would face several hurdles: 1) the cost of shipping and insuring the car as cargo 2) registering the car in a European country and getting insurance there- a car has to be registered and insured in the same place. Some companies like Mercedes and Porsche offer a European purchase and delivery program, but that is based on buying one of their cars brand new-obviously very expensive. The only option really, is to rent a car once you are in Europe. I have done it many times and always use Sixt rent a car. Good rates and decent cars. They may have restrictions on which countries you can drive to as well , but he should check them out. " There has to be a way to get insurance for my vehicle - I'm sure other members have solved this issue somehow already. |
Hi Michael:
Welcome to the HUBB community. There is a great deal of information that will answer your question here in the forums. Just have a browse through this "Trip Paperwork" forum, you will find lots and lots of very detailed posts about exactly this subject. Executive Summary: Presuming you leave the North American plate on your moto, it is not difficult to get liability insurance for Europe (and other countries further east). It's virtually impossible to get insurance for theft, collision, comprehensive, etc. Michael PS: for insurance during the shipping process, consult the carrier you are shipping with. |
