How to contact ADAC for insurance?
 

Several postings on this site have recommended the German company ADAC for temporary insurance, and even gave the name of a contact, Mirjam Grundler. I e-mailed Ms. Grundler at the address listed on the posting but I haven't received a reply. I tried calling her at the number listed for ADAC, but the guy who answered the phone didn't speak English, and just said "no" when I asked for Mirjam Grundler. Bottom line is that I haven't gotten anywhere trying to find out if ADAC can provide insurance this summer. Does anyone have any ideas on how I might contact someone there?

I have been in contact with Mirjam at ADAC by email for green card insurance for my Canadian reg. bike. The last information she gave me was that my insurance would be sent April 6 but that was the last time she could help because she is leaving ADAC for three years. My insurance has not arrived and I am trying to contact her, but I think she has already left...

That is very bad news! Mirjam was very helpful, and spoke English.

We need a volunteer who speaks German to contact ADAC and find out who has replaced Mirjam, and if that person speaks English, or if there is anyone else who could assist non-German speakers with green card insurance.

In the meantime, Brigitte Werner, who deals with carnets for ADAC, does speak English and may be able to help or at least direct you to the right individual.

Good news and bad news. The good news is that basic third party liability green card insurance for foriegn registered motorcycles (called Grenzversicherung)is available through ADAC for 22 Euros a month.
The bad news is that it is not available by post or email. You must show up in person or assign someone to go to an ADAC office with your original registration paperwork to apply and pay for it. This from Jens Messerschmidt at ADAC.

I received an e-mail dated 4/25 from Brigitte Werner at ADAC, and she told me that insurance must be issued in the country in which the bike is registered. In my case, since my bike will be registered in the UK, she said that I will have to get insurance from a British company.

Here is her message:

sorry for the delay. If the motorcycle will be registered in the UK then you
have to look for a Britsh motor vehicle insurance and they will give you the
International Green Card which is valid in all EC countries plus Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland.

Brigitte Werner deals with carnets rather than Green Card insurance, so she may just be confused. But having said that, ADAC has been issuing carnets for foreign registered vehicles as well.

It's not so critical in the case of carnets, because they are available from other agencies in Europe, but ADAC has been the main source for Green Card insurance for North Americans coming to Europe. So, if they've now decided not to issue it for foreign registered vehicles, it will mean the only alternative is expensive insurance from the US agencies.

I think at this point we need intervention by a German speaker (GS George?) to clarify the situation. Has ADAC changed their policies, or is this just a case of a new person who isn't familiar with what has been done in the past?

I just returned from Germany, where I presented myself at an ADAC office with my Canadian ownership, and received a Green Card valid for the month of July without any problems. Cost Euro 22.00. Bike is registered in Canada. I will ship bike to London on July 1 for an extended trip overland. This saves me running around in London town to buy this kind of insurance. They told me that since Ms. Gruendler's pregnancy leave, no mail order green cards will be issued. You have to present yourself in person.

IMPORTANT NOTE from Brigitte Werner, ADAC:

"we no longer issue the carnet de passages for people living outside Germany and for vehicles not registered in Germany. There were too many problems with customs formalities and refunding the guarantee."

So forget that avenue if you're not German resident with a German registered bike.
