Hungarian Carnets?

My experiences with the dreaded Carnet d passage have led to many hours of in-saddle contemplation and hypothesizing regarding the possibility of trying a trip with a "Hungarian Carnet".
Far be it of course for me to suggest that I would actually go ahead with such criminal contemplations; this is all hypothesis...
If i were to enter a country with a fake carnet and then sell my bike in that country what would be the ramifications of such action? I would have left a trail of fake Carnet slips along my way bearing my actual identity. Of course my details have to correspond with my passport.
Would i potentially be getting an unpleasant knock on my door somewhere down the line? What of the poor guy who buys my bike, would he be able to register it?
Again, these are simply the musings of an old traveler, a Carnet is a legal document- forging that could be a serious offense. Then a again document fraud in a victim less crime, like punching someone in the dark...

I'd be interested in how it is done. I might want to get a Hungarian one too ;)

DON'T do it. It's the same offence as smuggling, PLUS false documents, and you could land in a very nasty jail for a very long time, and of course the confiscation of your bike. (We saw a LOT of vehicles impounded in Egypt at the Customs office - from brand new Range Rovers on down.)

Border guards in many countries are VERY familiar with what a carnet looks like. AND every carnet issued has a unique serial number - all he has to do is fax the AIT in Switzerland if he's the slightest bit suspicious and you're done. :oops2:

Search the HUBB on "dodgy carnets" and read carefully. The subject has been much discussed.

And the guy buying it still has an illegal bike - no he can't legally register it, it's not legally in the country, there is no legal bill of sale or registration document so he's an idiot to buy it.

A carnet isn't generally all that big a deal to get, most countries you can get an insurance form of carnet so you don't have to put out a huge amount of money. Read the Carnet section - menu on left - and if you're still in doubt get our DVD - there's a full section on carnets where we explain all the ins and outs. It's not that bad.

Thanks , I know its a bitch but you gotta do it, just feels like such a pain in the ass. Expensive one at that! I dont realy have a pressing moral issues with this, but theres always the othre guy at the end of the line left with an illegal bike and thats not cool. (I do have pressing issus with doing time in Tanzania...)

PS Srileo, there are certainly ways of doing it, but you would be playing with fire..

After a little more research, i decided its definitely not worth the tension. I have the $, and the CAA seem to be a sensible bunch that are not out to simply whack us out of money, but they have a job to do as i do.
