insurance at Osaka or Kobe
Dear all
are there anyone who can tell me from their experience a good place to get insurance either in Osaka or Kobe ? Cheers!!! |
You can get insurance from any motorcycle shop.
The prices and services are about the same any place you go. The manditory (jibaiseki) insurance is usually sold for periods of two years, but you can get it for as short as one month. |
cheers chris, what if I get caught by the police when I'm on my way in getting the insurance after leaving the port ? besides the vehicle registration documents, do they usually check also the insurance papers ?

Well, you can probably get insurance before picking up your bike.
Your carnet should have all the information you need (VIN and license number). An address in Japan will help, too. Police usually don't check insurance, but they may if it is a foreign-registered bike. Just drive carefully, with the rest of traffic, and you shouldn't have any problems. Do not go fast, and do not change lanes at the solid yellow lines. Chris http://www2.gol.com/users/chrisl/japan/ |
Hi Chris, I should be arriving at Osaka port on 10th July, I don't have a carnet with me this time, coz there's no authority issuing a carnet in Shanghai, quoting from what you said I can probably get insurance before picking up, do you have some web-based insurance online shop which can deal with foreign registered vehicle that can introduce me ? My GF is now in Japan, and she did a lot of enquires for me, but no insurance company know how to deal with my case, their reply were like only Japanese registered vehicle can obtain the insurance. I know there must be some ways of doing it rite ?

Based on the infromation that you give me, I already sent out an inquiry and quotation request, the travel planning is now in the middle stage. Today I also got information from the "General Insurance Association of Japan", their advice are as follows: "Dear Grant-san, Thank you for your inquiry of June 5.I guess that you have been well informed by the JAF people about the necessary procedures for the temporary import of your automobile into Japan. On that condition, I personally recommend that you check the following site so that you can understand the basic procedures for taking out an automobile insurance policy in Japan. http://www.ace-insurance.co.jp/en/car_insu/ Actually, this site is not a GIAJ member, but I just looked it up for your reference because our member companies do not provide you with much information on such procedures in English. I hope the above will be of some help to you. Best regards, Makoto Kawagoe International Department The General Insurance Association of Japan" ACE is an insurance company in Japan providing english service, they have 4 agents in Tokyo and 1 in Osaka. They claim that their agents are also ok for english speaking service. Tokyo: OCCIDENTAL CARS Tel: 03-5768-6022E-mail: Insurance@occidental.co.jp MOJUMDAR & Co. Guys:
Just got a very quick reply few minutes ago from one of the agent in Tokyo MOJUMDAR & Co. Tel: 03-3281-2119E-mail: sales@mojumdar.com The guy who replied my inquiry was "Mr. Kawasaki Minoru" This is what he said: "Thank you for contacting us for your car insurance while driving in Japan. We have Japanese Compulsory Insurance here in Japn, which covers Bodily injury to the third party up to \30,000,000 and the premium will be \7,120 for 2 months." JPY 7120, that's around HKD or RMB 500, for 2 months, very fair ! I'm now waiting for other quotes and see the difference, will keep this thread update. |
A little bit of bad news today that I got reply from one of the insurance agent (Occidental cars). This is what he said:
"Thank you very much for your feedback. I am afraid, however, that you are overlooking very important points about Customs Guide you are referring to. 1. Please refer to Household Effects on Page 4. This exemptions are only applied to those who move to Japan and stay for more than one year. You say you are to travel in Japn for two months. 2. These are only regulations on custom clearance. Yes, you can get your car through the custom clearance. But the custom clearance of your car and the use of the car in Japan are prescribed under different laws; Customs Laws and Road and Transportation Laws. I understand that all the cars used in Japan have to get the legally-required vehicle inspection at Transportation Authority. Exceptions are Diplomat's and Carnet's. Please understand that Occidental cannot comply with any of your enquiry unless the aforementioned points are legally justified. You may be able to get any information at Japan Automobile Federation through website or any office of consulate at your end. I wish you to understand our situation about this matter." Any suggestions ? |
