Insurance for Turkey

Anyone got any idea how I can obtain insurance (probably only 3rd party) to ride my bike in Turkey.

If I was riding across the border I know I can obtain it at the border, BUT I'm shipping it in a container to Izmir.

TIA

Is Izmir a common place for shipping vehicles into Turkey? If it is, there's likely to be a little kiosk at the port, no?

Failing that, my suggestion would be (depending on how much time you have) to apply for it by post/internet and get the docs sent to you before you go to Turkey? I got it at the border when I entered Turkey and can't remember the name of the company any more, but I am sure someone somewhere on the HUBB will be able to tell you.

Another idea would be to find a pan-European company eg AXA and see if they can sell you 3rd party insurance for Turkey - that way you won't have to speak to them in Turkish via email or letter!

Finally - how about a Green Card? The Green Card System : Directgov - Motoring

It is also possible to drive without insurance.
Not recomended, but possible as I did it end 2008.
Nobody did ask for it, so I drove without with no problems.

Last summer we crossed Turkey and Iran by car and, as Ilesmark points out, the Green Card insurance covers you in both countries. I guess that it may be the same for motorcycles. You may have an Australian insurance, I guess, so no idea about OZ and green card...

Good luck,

Esteban
