Insuring UK motorcycle registered in my name as a foreigner
Hi all,
I'm spending a month touring around the EU on a motorcycle I've purchased in the UK which is registered in my name. I'm from Australia. I'd like to insure this bike with third party insurance [+fire & theft] if such a thing exists. Am I going to have any issues insuring this bike as a foreigner? Would it be more affordable to have it registered in the name of a UK friend and then be added as a driver on the insurance? I've done my Googling, but, there is a lot of talk about Green Cards re insurance, however this only applies to bikes which are non-UK/EU registered ie. foreign bikes. In this case, the only foreigner is myself :) Cheers, -p |

Hi Paravion
We do have third party fire and theft in the UK. Green card is what you need to extend UK insurance to cover other countries in Europe (i recall - increasingly most UK policies cover europe as a matter of course). Do a site search - lots of threads on UK insurance for foreigners. It can be a challenge but a recent thread provided a solution i think. Good luck..... ....and thanks for lending us Eddie Jones :-) Cheers Andy |
Welcome! :)
If you have address in the UK you should be able to get the insurance, even though some (but not all) require you to be the resident in the UK for some time. I guess all of the insurance companies will actually state in the Terms and Conditions that you have to be ordinary resident in the UK, but I'm not sure how much is this enforced. I'm guessing (but its just a guess) they'd be happier with this, than being added as a named driver to your friend's policy and then if an accident happens somewhere in the mountains of Romania explaining you just took her for a ride. For EU countries you do not need a green card anymore, your UK insurance certificate will be enough. For European non-EU countries (e.g. Balkan countries apart from Croatia) you do need a green card and you are unlikely to be able to get one from most UK insurers, so you'll need to buy local insurance on the border (which is easy, but sometimes costly). Enjoy the travel! :) |

Hi, obtaining compulsory insurance as far as I know will not be possible (not a resident and no working permit). Obtaining third party liability insurance is possible for the exact purpose of your riding a UK registered bike (owned by you) in EU , and we can provide this service if you decide to go this way Lobagola - Border insurance Let me know if you need any more info bier Cheers Dooby |
