International drivers license - only valid for a year

In Canada, we can only get an international drivers license for a year and you need to review it "in person". Is there a way around this? I'll be in Aussie or South America at the time it expires ...

I have a solution to that. I'll email you details rather than post 'cos its a bit....errm, well, frowned upon.

Can you email me too? Not that I can condone anything of borderline legality. But mine's just run out and I'm in Malawi.

Hi there,

I dont know if that's what you're after, but:

http://www.drivinglicence.org/

Got my licence easily, very good quality, valid for 10 years and the best thing: On line, so you can do it anywhere in the world!

Hope that helps!

From
http://www.mynrma.com.au/travel_driving_overseas.asp

(Australian [NSW] motoring organisation)

If you are overseas

Either a relative or friend can go into an NRMA Branch with:

* Proof you are 18 years or older (there is no upper age limit)
* Your name and address
* A photocopy of your current Australian Drivers Licence (front and back)
* A clear, recent passport-style photograph

The IDP will be issued in your name and they can send it to you overseas.

Alternatively you can fill in an IDP Application form and send to the address below:
NRMA Insurance 1
Locked bag 20
Hamilton DC NSW 2303

It is recommended that travellers resident in any country for more than twelve months should make arrangements to apply for a local licence. International Driving Permits are valid for twelve months and are designed for touring purposes only.

They have a pdf file you can print out and then post to them.

a black feltpen to cross the line which says ~valid for 1 year ~ (on the IDP issued in Holland at least) has done the trick for me the last 23 years travelling around. No policeman ever made problems for this.
On the newer version the IDP has the expiry date as well. In case it was needed (once) I told them it was the extension date stamp...
Apart from this, the last couple of years I just show my EU driver licence (Africa and South America.Don[t know if this works well in other continents too). Never been denied so far. (have the old IDP as back-up but is never needed)

Hi Kevin,
You might try faxing them your passport visa details to proof u are out of the country and a representative of yours should be able to apply it for you in person and mail it to you. Worked for me, though mines from Singapore. I wonder why i do it though, since no one has ever asked for my IDP in over 30 countries ive ridden through.
Hope this helps
