International Driving Permit in South America

How essential/advisable/useful is an International Driving Permit in South America? I have current licences from Oman and the U.K.

They are never interested in my aussie one, they always want my international. They ask for it by name.

In Peru, Bolivia and ecuador

I had the opposite experience, no one even knew what my International license was, they wanted to see my Texas USA one. Still worth having, IMO.
